Fishing Reports for Kern Riverlogin to add a report
Nothing nothing nothing a squaw fish thats its...
, 2010 - fly fished Brush Creek / Kern River confluence with large stone fly nymph patterns on sinking line down in the bottom hole. Water was clear, I guess 120 cfs, cold enough for trout action (60's). Waders helped a lot. 5 good strikes and slow reflexes got me a nice fat skunking. Should have practiced up on pier and surf fish before I went..
Posion Meadow Creek highly populated with small 8" golden trout
water is high and fast use a minum of 3oz weight

I will be going try my luck fly fishing the upper kern river this weekend. The responses below don't sound too optomistic. Any suggestions on what flies to try on the river?
Years ago, my buddy and me visited the East fork of the Kern. We got there via the Kennedy Meadows road from somewhere near Highway 395. Wow, what a beautiful, majestic drive that was. When we pulled up to a fishing spot, the first thing we saw was a sign that "warned" of bears in the area. While fishing, we both heard something crashing through the brush about 50 yards away. We looked at each other with mouths open, then made a bee-line for the car. No fish. Had to change our underwear later on,though.
Sorry for the late reply. The fishing is supposed to be pretty good right now. You can start near the power plant. But, if you don't get any bites within 15 minutes, move to a different section of the river. Try salmon eggs with a small sliding weight and 1 foot leader.
Don't spend too much time in a spot where you aren't getting any bites. At the Kern, you need to find where the fish are by moving around. Try stopping at the small "turnouts" that are close to the river. If the guy who plants the fish can climb down to the river with a net full of fish, so should you. Good luck

RUSS I AM THINKING OF GOING TO THE KERN THIS WEEKEND. DO YOU THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA. WE WERE THINKING OF GOING TO THE POWER PLANT.
One last note: I have never been skunked on the upper North Fork. I am certainly no pro. But, I think the secret is to use light line and very light leader. I am not a fly fisherman. I'm too lazy to swing that rod back and forth all day. Bait never fails at the Kern.
I have fished the upper Kern many times. Salmon eggs always work well. But, I caught my biggest fish, a 16 incher, on a nightcrawler. Boy did he put up a fight. Try using 4 pound test with 2 or 3 pound leader. Cast upstream and let the current carry your bait to the fish. Use a small sliding weight with about a 2 foot leader. If you don't get a bite after about 10 casts, you need to move to a new spot. Don't spend too much time in a spot where you aren't getting any bites. You need to find the fish by moving frequently. I always thought that trout liked cold water. But, if the water gets too cold, the fish get sluggish. Try stopping at the small turnouts along the road. Sometimes you can catch your limit in the most unlikely places. I was once told that.. if there is enough room for the planting truck to park in a turnout, they will park and dump some fish in that part of the river.
Fishing the Kern this time of the year can be slow .Its also a good time to hook some big ones. limestone with lead line and big bug.
Thakns for the Kern River report Joe. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. I've seen that river many times and it is VERY beautiful. Hopefully someone else will give us some good tips on fishing that thing.
