The San Gabriel rivers are now so trashed that it is not worth going in there. Diapers, broken beer bottles, condoms are all part of the river. Break ins at the parking lot are so common that the Sheriffs just have you drive to the local sub station. They won't respond. If you want a completely urban trash/wilderness experience....this is the spot for you. DFG is going to quit stocking trout because of the trash. Don't waste your time. Go to the Mt Baldy trout pools to fish for big trout!

The San Gabriel River(s)are probably the biggest, constantly flowing rivers in Southern California. But, this isn't saying much. In the summer, the rivers can almost slow to a trickle. Sadly, the whole area can become a ZOO during warm weather. And that's putting it lightly. It's a short drive from a very heavily populated area. And so everybody and their mother will go up there to party and ride ATV's and throw rocks in the water. When that happens, forget about fishing.

Thanks Russ for the information. I was not aware of the North fork of the San Gabriel river either!

Many people don't realize that there is a North fork of the San Gabriel river. It runs along the main road after you pass the bridge at the West fork. And you would never guess that there are trout in there. But, there are! I caught 3 10-inchers on salmon eggs in a stream that was no more than 3 feet wide. What a surprise!
