Going to the Merced just past the entrance
right outside the valley...Just two questions. 1.Flies, sugesstions? 2.Stick to the Merced or venture into the valley. I have done both but figured someone might have better info. NORM if you check this site out, it's Kirk. remember...lost ring. |
Yo-no 05/10/2008 17:36:25 GMT
how's the fishing? ? ? ? ?
Yo-no 04/30/2008 00:06:30 GMT
|
you can google both places... but from what i know:
limits: 5- trouts 5- black bass no limit on catfish or carp and i think pan fish is something like 10-25 each... can't recall much... with black bass length: can be kept in all sizes except between 12 in- 15 in... so below 12 inch is keepable, and above 15 in is keepable...just not between 12 --> 15inch... |
Dan Curry 04/29/2008 22:08:27 GMT
Where online, can I find rules regarding types of fish and exceptable size / restrictions, of the catch from McSwain McClure, that I may lawfully keep?
ms.bigmike 04/28/2008 11:04:55 GMT
went to mc swain yesterday not knowing about the derby....it was packed but not all the bad....caught nada....went back down to the bridge and caught 4 real nice trout...one over 5 lbs...released them all...it was a blast...gl guys
Yo-no 04/27/2008 00:46:23 GMT
|
McSwain was packed today because of the fishing derby... i went to McClure again, but today didn't fair as good as yesterday... trout still biting fairly well on worms though... worms are also catching bass... but minnows didn't get any bites at all? all the boats and stuff must be making the fish finiky....
and those carps, they're such picky eaters! wish they'd be more active! how's everyone? |
Yo-no 04/26/2008 02:11:00 GMT
went to McClure today... caught a couple trouts and a 16 inch l.m. bass... using worms...
Brian Garmon 04/24/2008 10:55:35 GMT
I've been kayaking all up and down the merced river. I recently found an amazing spot. My latest was a stripper, twenty four and three quarter inches
Yo-no 04/21/2008 21:49:49 GMT
|
if you heard all kinds of fish jumping, the question is how were the fishing jumping? the common fish that jumps all the time would be Carps... see orange-red color would be the description... carps eat cereal or bread stuff... or corn... or some people make their own bait for carp... just google it...
unless it is bass that are chasing shads or minnows... it is still spring, it's mating season... so maybe their eating to fatten up? |
skimixx 04/21/2008 04:39:29 GMT
I went to the river last week, the one that runs through Laird park in Modesto. I was fishing for catfish with chicken livers. I had no luck, but I heard all kinds of fish jumping. They sounded pretty big. Does anyone know what they were and how to catch them?
Yo=no 04/19/2008 23:36:33 GMT
|
I went to McClure today... wow, it was there bass... shads were swarming in the coves, with a large group of hungry basses chasing them! that made fishing easy...
it took me a while to find the "right bait" for them to take, but it was all worth while... well, i tried two different kinds of crank bait and they didn't work, but when i put on my topwater lure, i got frenzy attacks! seeing the groups of shads jumping on the surface of the water and then throwing in the top water lure it produced a "SLAM"... i saw that worms and minnows were also working for other guys... but i caught the biggest one... a decent 18-19 inch large mouth bass... I caught two 14 in basses also, but regulation does not allow taking of it so i angrily threw it back into the water... oh yeah, using minnows with bobbers, trouts were taking them too! also using cast masters... the guys next to me caught up to about 5 trouts total... and one guy to the left of me caught a 15-18 inch catfish using anchovie i think... i caught a glimpse of a carp, and tried using cereal and bread as bait, but didn't get any luck... how i would love to reel one in! |

Much respect to your son is what I meant to say.
|
Jason (Navy Vet) 04/18/2008 11:32:09 GMT
I live in Modesto San Joaquin is decent. Use about a 1 ounce sinker and your bait about 6in-1 1/2 feet above sinker. Don't have to cast out far maybe 15-30 feet let your sinker hit bottom, set line semi-taunt w/ loose drag sit back and wait. Liver works the best out there and anchovies are good too cause you can catch striper out there on the chovies. Good luck and much repect to your son for serving out county. From one military guy to another.
john 04/13/2008 20:22:20 GMT
hmmmm...thanks...well give that a try. I hate chicken liver anyway.
Yo-no 04/12/2008 17:19:37 GMT
John, if it don't matter WHAT kinda of fish you're fishing for and you just want to catch some fish, go fish at the san joaquin river... cat fish always bite there using anchovies or chicken liver?

My son is home from Iraq. I was thinking about going on a fishing outing with him and my other son, 10 years old. Fishing came to mind and I found this website. I don't fish much these days...last time was years ago in the high sierras when I backbacked. I need suggestions. I live in the Merced area. Where should we go and what type of bait should we use?

Right on big Dave. Thanks for the info. I have a caught some really nice Trout fishing w/ shiney spoons @ McClure. I don't have a boat so all from the bank. I try and find boulders along the banks get on top of them and drop my spoon down to the bottom. Pop it up and down let it flutter and WHAM!!!. Some times when reeling up you can see the fish fly up from the bottom and crush your lure. Lots of fun. Like anything else fishing related takes time.

fishing for blue gills during the winter is hard... it's hard to spot them... it's like they dissapear during the winter, and then show up in late spring...

has anyone caught trout at merced river by mcswain and what
bait are you using |
ballkid 02/04/2008 17:16:22 GMT
you have to use the back eddy's, if all else fails I use the outboard. I usualy have a car at the take-out.
Yo-no 02/04/2008 15:00:17 GMT
I've nevered understood how you canoe back going upstream... going downstream is easy, but upstream?
ballkid 02/04/2008 11:17:53 GMT
yo-no, drifting my 14 foot canoe with both fly and spin tackle for trout, bass and striped bass is the way to go for me. Kyaks are great because of there light weight. I have not fished out of a tub. As a kid I fished out of 55gal. drum cut in half long ways. Hot tubs work good but that is a different kind of fishing.
Yo-no 02/03/2008 03:08:41 GMT
|
so who boats, canoes, tub, or just does shore fishing?
tackle, live bait, fly fish? jw... |
Jason 02/01/2008 16:41:15 GMT
Yeah it is pretty secluded down there so I don't worry about DFG too much except when we come back to the car. They seem to be pretty cool in my experiences as long as you are doing the right thing. It is fun a lot of native trout there. Got to be willing to hike like I said. Oh and lots of Poison Oak. I have got it many times there but the fishing is so good I can't resist.
ms.bigmike 02/01/2008 11:55:25 GMT
|
25 or so thats great...sounds like a blast...good luck to ya keep up the good work
|
ms.bigmike 02/01/2008 11:54:44 GMT
my understanding is the DFG in the area is pretty tight on any barb... if they feel the bump they ticket...we actually have been grinding the barbs off with a drill and it works great and only takes a few minutes
Jason 02/01/2008 11:42:42 GMT
|
I actually do really well at the Stanislaus, I only walk the banks there though. The stretch that I fish is all catch and release w/ barbless hooks. I crimp down the barbs on my spin lures w/ plier and go at it. I have had days where I have release 25 fish and my buddy the same. You have to be willing to do some SERIOUS hiking though.

ballkid 01/20/2008 22:43:05 GMT

ballkiid 01/16/2008 17:09:54 GMT
Jason, The stan can be tough this time of year. You can do well floating it below nights ferry when the water clears. I have done well at goodwin dam, but fishing there is tough. I live in manteca and have been exploring the river from ripon to modesto, lots of smallmouth and small stripers.
Jason 01/16/2008 15:31:20 GMT
Unfortunaley BallKid I wasn't able float the river. On top of the dam situation. My friend flaked...his woman laid down the law I guess... I fished the Stanislaus by myself. Water was really murky and dirty there as well. I am assuming from the rain run-off.
Jason 01/16/2008 15:29:44 GMT
Mcswain Dam

ballkid 01/14/2008 21:36:28 GMT
jason; I was hoping for a good merced river fishing story from you. Which dam are you talking about? the mcswain dam or the small PG&E dam. How did you do on the Stan?

Will go fishing soon... =]
Jason 01/14/2008 09:03:19 GMT

Went to the Merced this Saturday, They are working on the dam, Not very much water coming out at all near McSwain. Further down seemed fishable. However I ended up going to the Stanislaus and fishing there.

Jason 01/11/2008 16:13:23 GMT
Nevermind about the Oakdale Rd thing figured it out.
Jason 01/11/2008 14:12:32 GMT
When you talk about the Merced River at Oakdale Rd. What Oakdale Rd. are you talking about???? What city??? Modesto? Merced???
Jason 01/11/2008 13:46:12 GMT
Ballkid... I wouldn't mind taking you w/ me at all. The only problem is I am going w/ my buddy in his 2 man canoe. If it wasn't for that I would be more than willing to take you along. My main concern is how high or low the water is right now. I am pretty familiar w/ part of the river near the McSwain dam but below the bridge I am not familiar with. Ballkid contact me at jay_jay359@yahoo.com. We can work something out for another day/another trip. I live in Modesto and go out to McSwain and other local areas often.
ballkid 01/10/2008 21:28:30 GMT
jason, take me with you and I will show you all the tricks for that area. I have been down that part of the river many times. I wont even charge you for the guid service and I will buy the beer! my fishing buddy just got a bass boat and now he won't help carry my canoe. as long as the water is not to high it is great fishing.
Jason 01/10/2008 15:50:20 GMT
|
Anyone fished the Merced recently. Say... below McSwain on down to about A1 or so??? Thinking about taking the canoe out. Any tips or info would be helpful. Thanks in advance Jay.

Yaketty 12/06/2007 22:17:39 GMT
Why did you fish with a truck trout in the first place? Did you suspect a big striper, or were you trying for a huge brown.
Yo-no 11/30/2007 02:37:42 GMT
haha, really funny guys.
Yo-no 11/30/2007 02:04:59 GMT
Border Hopper was right. I reluctantly used a trout for bait at Mc Swain and landed a monster striper. It was in the 25 pound range. I feel so stupid now. i'm sorry for saying thing like. "Well, if Stripers are thriving in McSwain i guess i'm going to have to wake up early and try some TOPWATER... cuz they are killers for stripers..." i am so wrong. Even if it is illegal, who cares. It's only illegal if you get caught. Border Hopper, because of you, I have a new perspective on things. Thanks for the eye opener. I also took a picture at A-1 bait too and posted it next to the guy with the biggest striper there... I hope that's you next to my picture, Border Hopper.
Yo-no 11/29/2007 00:13:48 GMT
|
Dude, trout are very weak creature. They don't stay alive very long after you catch them, so i wouldn't think they would stay alive very long even if you bought them as bait. Minnows already has a short lifespan from the store to the fishing place, i'm thinking trout has a even shorter lifespan. The only way i would think of actually having a live trout is if you fished for one, and use it as bait right away. (like catching baby bass, bluegills or crappie, then using as live bait, which i think is illegal.)
I'm not saying it's not possible, but IF there was stripers thriving in McSwain, wouldn't people be aware of that already? and knowing how stripers feed, wouldn't the chances of catching a striper just using rooster tail or castmaster be a high probability? Also, with Merced River connected to McSwain, it is possible. But with McSwain's super cold water temp, can Stripers even thrive? It's so cold that only trouts thrive in there, and an occasional blue gills blown down from McClure's damn...?What about the boat trollers, what are their chances of catching stripers? Well, if Stripers are thriving in McSwain i guess i'm going to have to wake up early and try some TOPWATER... cuz they are killers for stripers... and yes, i know trout provides the any bass species food all yr long if it is available. How do you think all the reseviors in the Sierras has such big bass? My opinion on trout, they taste good. Yes, stripers do taste better though. I'll stop by A-1 shop next time i go by. I hope to see your striper there border hopper. |
bobo 11/28/2007 21:22:47 GMT
border hopper: were can i buy live rainbow trout to use for bait. Is that legal? any who!
border hopper 11/28/2007 06:44:49 GMT
I used live rainbow trout to fish for S-T-R-I-P-E-D B-A-S-S (STRIPERS) not rainbow trout. I'm not a retard. I'm telling you, you gotta try it. What can mimic a live fish better than another live fish, huh? Besides those trout are worthless anyways, they taste like shit, and are only good for bait. Next time you go out to Mc Swain, hook a rainbow trout on the back with a 5/0 hook, with at least some 20lbs test line, with no sinker, and let it swim with your bail open for about 50 yards, then close bail and wait. I guarantee you will hook on to a STRIPER no less than 15 pounds... that's 30 inches plus. I got pictures at A-1 bait if you don't believe me. Just look around. STRIPERS aren't being caught because no one is fishing for them. I warning you, that I will make you a believer. Soon Mc Swain will be known for STRIPERS, not gay ass rainbow trouts. STRIPERS are known to thrive, especially when they have an unlimited supply of rainbow trout to feed on. BELIEVE IT!!!
Yo-no 11/28/2007 00:43:33 GMT
I've caught brook trout before out of McSwain, but that's been about a good 9 yrs since i caught one outta there. (At the base of the dam coming from Lake Mcclure) I've heard that the brook trout didn't do too well in McSwain because of something so they stopped planting them there.
Brooke Trout 11/27/2007 07:47:46 GMT
Has anyone ever caught any Brook Trout out of McSwain. I know they planted them but have never heard of anyone catching any????
ballkid 11/25/2007 17:29:03 GMT
yo-no; yes that is the best part. the rivers are closed below the lowest dam. the merced is closed below crocker hoffman. but above the dam the river has the same regulations as the lakes. when the river reopens the fishing is good at the base of the dam. I do well with anything that looks like salmon fry. kidball68@yahoo.com
Yo-no 11/25/2007 16:48:16 GMT
Isn't M. River closed for fishing during this month because of the salmon run? I went to McConnel Park and they said no fishing until Jan. 2008. Also Fox grove on Geer Road pass turlock had the same sign somewhat (tuolomne R.)?
Yo-no 11/25/2007 16:46:05 GMT
thanks ballkid, but isn't there a no fishing regulation or something like that around that section of M. River, or is just that you have to use barbless hooks? I remember people telling me how that got tickets for fishing around that area a while back?
Yo-no 11/25/2007 16:43:46 GMT
|
why would you (border hopper) use live rainbow trout as bait FISHING FOR rainbow trout... that does not make any sense?
It's almost winter. Trout plant are taking place again. Any luck? |
border hopper 11/24/2007 09:08:23 GMT
i went to lake mc swain and caught two 30inch stripers (in the 15-20 lbs range). i was using live rainbow trout for bait. i don't know how these stripers got there but they did. all i can say is those sorry ass trouts are gonna be extinct in mc swain.

yo-no. you go east through snelling toward lake mclure. I want to say 4to5 miles past snelling. you cant see it from the road. but if you look close you can see the hatchery wiich is at the base of the dam. you are getting close when the river gets close to thr road. A-1 bait and tackle is on the left and if you get to the bait shop you have gone 2 or 3 hundred yards to far. there is a old county park that has been closed for ever. there is a parking lot,at the front of that old park( looks like an empty field with a square, gravel parking lot for fishermen on the river side of the road). The parking lot is fenced off and has a gate, which I think is locked in the winter. ( I just park on the road or float from the pg&e dam) any way the crocker hoffman dam is directly behind the house west of were you will park, the owner dosn,t mind if you walk on the trail behind the house. she even helped me with my canoe once. good luck!

It's November! How's everyone doing? Well, stripers were biting well at Oneil Forbay in Santa Nella on top water on early mornings, but I went on Friday and no bite? Maybe the striper strikes are now somewhere else...

If your not fishing below Merced Falls Dam down to Crocker Hoffman you are missing some of the finest dry fly fishing in the world...Not easy access---but what ever it takes do it...Blue Wing Olives 18 and smaller are the ticket now...Many fish to 20 inches...You do not need a guide..Fished it over the week-end "Fantastic" Hatchery supplies plenty of fish all year long...Look wild but are not....feed well by a LOCAL on dry food.
Yo-no 10/07/2007 04:19:15 GMT
went fishing at midpine... water is very very very low, and the algae are not brown, rather than green a month ago... with the water low, fish are not biting as well it seems, but caught three small mouth ranging from 12 inch to 20 inch on top water right before dark... live worms drew smaller bass, but no big ones... tried live crawdad too, but with no success...
ballkid 09/18/2007 21:58:23 GMT
sculpin: I have landed 5 or 6 nice trout 20 inch + in the large pool below the dam at the hatchery. I a friend of a friend landed a 10 pounder in that same pool on a night crawler(not leagal}. I use an eggfry pattern in jan. and feb. and get amazing strikes. I have caugt nice fish all the way down to the park at snelling. good luck. p.s. the little store {A1 bait and tackle} near the dam has a pictur of the 10 pounder, and you can usualy get good info there.

Yo-no 09/06/2007 00:37:29 GMT
Up by midpine(along 140 E towards yosemite), crawdad imatations lures gets the smallmouth crazy... by the way they attack the imatation lures, i would imagine that real crawdad would get even bigger bites... with the water low up there, the smallies seems to be biting pretty well during the afternoons...

You do not have to wait until September to fish the Lower Merced River..The Mill pond above Merced Falls dam can be great all year. Caddis and a small nymphs will work fine. After sunset is best for caddis especially above the bridge. Skiddering a dry caddis will attract violent takes.. Hang on. You will normally need a float tube or a small boat. Good Luck

Lower Merced is running about 1700 per/second..Lower River will drop in late Sept. Fishing can be Great in Sept and Oct. and again Jan - March..Fishing below Merced Falls Dam is fantastic in those months...These are not wild fish as some locals think...fish are fed by local trailer house resident with trout feed purchased in a Merced Store..When river drops I will give more detailed reports....MERCED FALLS and be good to excellent for planted large fish

Fellow anglers,
I haven't lived in Merced for many years and now reside in Sacramento fishing the many abundant rivers (Sac., American, Feather, Yuba, Putah Creek, etc.). Planning to head down your way while spouse is spending time with family. Since my game is fly-fishing..., how is the Merced River? And, does anyone have any recommendations where i fly. nearby? Cheers, jerry |

Eric 07/20/2007 10:54:36 GMT
Hit the Merced up the other day and did really well, lots of bass, the largest for 3 1/2 but ended up catching 18 of them most small ones though.

Hey guys how is the fishing, haven't went in a while. Need some info boys. Let me know.

DFG defines steelhead as "any trout over sixteen inches in anadromous waters" which wouldn't be my definition (I like to hang on to the idea of fish actually going to sea). I think there are some nice trout(even in summer), but the scaling, color and body shape don't look sea-run to me.
Thanks Ballkid-- hope to see your there sometime. |
jeff 07/09/2007 00:56:46 GMT
|
winter would suggest steelhead thx guys[can you tell I love steelhead]
|
ballkid 07/08/2007 23:18:00 GMT
there are steelhead in the merced river. I have heard this from many people including the DFG who I found on the river counting the salmon. I have caught trout up to 7# below crocker hoffman dam. I don't know how to tell which is a trout or which is a steelhead, but i only seem to catch them in the winter.
Eric 07/08/2007 23:00:29 GMT
Hey Jeff, I've never heard of steelhead in the merced river, but if their is any there going to be up more towards the northern part of it.
jeff 07/08/2007 20:44:22 GMT
Any steelhead this year guys?
ballkid 07/07/2007 16:06:51 GMT
salgairdneri. I have fished much of the lower merced. The fishing is great. I have caught bass up to 8#, no big stripers, the largest was 10# but I caught that on a 5 wt. fly rod. a 20# plus broke me off on light tackle last year. any way, for bass, below HY 59 Is were is were the bass are. from 59 to oakdale RD is good for lg. and small mouth. it is about an 8 hr float depending on how fast you fish. 1/2 mile down stream, from 59, is a lg pool verry bassy!!!!. the whole strech is awesome. I use a 14 ft canoe because there is no good place to launch a boat. At the take out, at oakdale Rd. is a little better, but you still have to carry about 50 yrds. below oakdale I have caught some big bass. but I have not floated it yet, I plan to in the next couple weeks. get back to me.
salgairdneri 07/06/2007 18:23:37 GMT

Great site! Would like to float the lower river for bass and stripers. Where are the better launches for a car topper?
I fished the Tuolumne last weekend at Fox Grove- caught about a dozen smallies to 2 1/2 pounds on unweighted plastic worms where there was current. The slow water was mostly dead-- we saw a few cats as well. |
ballkid 07/04/2007 22:11:05 GMT

Yo-no 04/28/2007 00:44:37 GMT
For carp, bread or cereal. Wheat bread of any kind, or kellogs wheaties. Half frost, half regular. wet the wheaties, until kinda soft then mold into a ball. Put onto hook. Make sure cereal on hook is good set. You can also mix it with wheat break. a spit to the bait for good luck is also good. carp also eat worms. expect a fight, for carps are crazy fighters. you never know, anchovies might work, but cereal and bread works best. walmart also sells carp bait, but never tried em before. carp mouth are kinda small, so use smaller hooks like trout hooks or so. good luck.
Eric 04/26/2007 21:31:39 GMT
Hey yeah, how do you catch carp, what do you use for bait because i have no clue how to get them to bite.
Yo-no 04/26/2007 11:51:48 GMT

Yeah we know what senkos are my man, yet it is very hard to use worms with a current unless you carolina rig it. Put a splitshot about 1 foot above the warm.
The river has gone up a few feet so the fishin is hard because your bait moves much faster in the current. You just have to be good at hitting your spots. Good luck |
Yo-no 04/21/2007 01:53:13 GMT
|
I've been reading a lot on bass lately, and pro's says that Senkos is one of the most effective bait for bass. Has anyone tried using Senkos?
(senkos is plastic worms. Go to basspro.com and look up senkos products. recommended site for buying or just surfing at fishing stuff). any updates on the Merced R.? or anywhere else? |
Eric 04/17/2007 18:11:21 GMT
Yeah the water has gone up some, I think it hurts us when it comes to bass fishing because the bass become less agressive because they are deeper in there holes, though stripers are hitting everything and not too bad for catfish as well. good info guys keep it up.
Yo-no 04/16/2007 21:18:13 GMT
Seems like water has gotten up! Water in Ballico went up! good or bad i dunno, but i caught a bass today. Not a keeper though =[. Still something is better than nothing! using 4 inch grub jig.

The other night my gf's mom went fishing at O-neil. She caught a nice 22 incher with anchovies. Seems like the bite is kinda picking up. (referring to night fishing)
My co-work told me the other day he went at the aquaduct. Where 165 and I-5 kinda meets. He said within 2 hrs, his buddies and he caught 5 keepable size stripers with anchovies during the day. Maybe try there Ben. |

Refering to Merced near San Juaquin, where do you unload your boat at? fishermen's bend? Near Gustine?
Seems like over the year they gated alot of places near there because it's private property. I still remember a while back where i would park off by the bridge, but i don't think they allow parking there anymore? What are u using for catfish? chicken liver? what sizes are you using on crankbait, etc Eric? would appreciate it. |
Eric 04/10/2007 10:36:35 GMT
Hey been fishing on the merced near the San Juaquin and have been nailing the bass like crazy on spinner baits, crank baits and jerk baits. And catfishing wise I got a nice 6 lb the other night. I've also been floating in a boat down the river catching a boat load of them that way to, because you can hit all the little holes. Keep up the great information guys.
Yo-no 04/08/2007 21:27:25 GMT
|
what test LB do you guys use for bass, stiper and cats? (or crappy). i was just wondering. (brand names? Berkley? Vanish? Spider?)
I use 4-6 lb. 4 Lb seems best for crappie fishing at McClure. I heard that using Frozen Deli Shrimp (like at super markets) are good bait. Has anyone tried using it? jw? |
Yo-no 04/08/2007 21:23:57 GMT
would you guys please specify which part of Merced River? its kinda confusing... there's so many parts of Merced River. From Sierra to Merced Falls, to MR bridge before getting to Don Pedro, to ballico to the interchange water near newman of Merced river and San juaqion? thanks.
Yo-no 04/08/2007 21:20:21 GMT

been fishing out on Merced River more down south... by Ballico... thats past Winton, and almost to turlock... fishing being on and off. Last month was better than this month for bass fishing i think. Last month, i used crank bait, throwing in into the water where there is current (also standing in water knee length), and had a few success. My buddie even caught a carp using crank bait, never would have though of it possible. Caught 15 inch Bass, and so on.
Today i went, and i didn't have much luck. Tried top water, tripple ripple, bass tornado. Last week by a broken tree was hitting good, but today i went and no luck. these other guys across the river from me were using chicken liver, and they caught catfishes. And then surprising, they caught a 20-25 inch stripe bass. Never thought Stripe bass would hang out around this portion of Merced river, but they caught it! i'll try anchovies next time. anyone else has any updates on any hot spots? |
Ben 04/05/2007 16:58:48 GMT

Ben 04/05/2007 16:05:13 GMT

Eric 04/05/2007 11:54:20 GMT
Hey Ben I caught a couple nice cats and a real nice striper the other night. I was using liver.
Ben 04/05/2007 08:47:46 GMT
Oh boy I'm having a tough time out there. Fishing off shore, worms and poppers. I can see lots of what I think are bass or crappie jumping out the water! I hear they are going to stock soon? Has anyone seen stripers or cat out there in Mclure/McSwain ?
Eric 04/02/2007 23:06:27 GMT
Hey guys I've been nailing them as of late, nice large mouths. 3 nice 4 pounders on a spinner bait by logs and rocks.

eric 03/09/2007 20:03:15 GMT
Hey Ben I like to use a top water popper, or a spinner bait with a skirt for bass, now for stripers I like to use anchovies and for catfish chicken liver. hope that helps you a little. P.s tell more people about this site so we can keep up on the fish.
Ben 03/09/2007 15:31:38 GMT

Done lots of fishing on the west side of Los Banos for strippers and bass. Since I live in Merced I discovered the river and it has many great places to fish! Except my fishing isn't working out for me here (yet). Whole different ball game it seems. I'm trying out lures, worms, spinners and floaters, mainly in the area of Merced Falls. Got any advice on fishing spots, best fish seasons and bait?
Thanks guys! |

I went yesterday and did okay, cought 3 bass not real big but they are starting to hit. I went cat fishin the other night and cought a 4 pounder and a 7 pound striper.
|
Gary 02/28/2007 22:57:10 GMT
I fished the river last weekend and we only cought one bass and lots of hits and rolls. You would have to fish slow with suspended baits to get any type of hits.
eric 01/08/2007 22:15:06 GMT

Hi Eric, I am on 140; anywhere between Mariposa and the land slide is fine. My sense is that the water is running too fast for good fishing, or am I wrong? Where would you recommend we go?
Thanks, Raffi. |
eric 07/03/2006 12:40:52 GMT
Raffi. Hey if you can give me a little more infomation i can let you know because there are few that know the merced like i do. Are you talking about Highway 140? Let me know your status and i'll try helping.

Good stuff Jim. Thanks for the information and a little history about the site. I'll keep people posted on the Merced and i'm pushing more people to check out the site.
Jim 05/26/2006 05:17:53 GMT
Eric, I moderate this site and unfortunately I can't fish all the rivers we cover here. My desire was to create a site where people could post and read reports. I wanted a site where many people could contribute and learn. I always appreciate it when you contribute Eric. Unfortunately others haven't been as generous. A lot of our traffic is driven by the search engine results (specifically Google) and unfortunately Google hasn't been very favorable toward us. I'm hoping that will change some day soon.
eric 05/25/2006 22:23:21 GMT

eric 03/20/2006 00:26:34 GMT
Yeah the water is pretty clear for being so high but it's really moving fast,so the fish are tucked back in there holes. Any info let me know. thanks
Jim 03/13/2006 09:00:10 GMT
What's the water visibility like? Are you taking that into consideration with your lures.
eric 03/13/2006 06:10:23 GMT

eric 01/22/2006 23:03:59 GMT
Nothing is biting in the winter time for some reason. We need to get more people reporting on the merced. Try getting people to post more comments.
pete 11/27/2005 10:56:55 GMT
Does anyone know what is biting in the merced as of recently? let me know thanks
eric 10/21/2005 01:45:12 GMT
Night fishing in the merced usually chicken liver best fits striper and solid Cats. Day time spinner bait will catch you lots of little large mouth bass to.
Jim 02/02/2005 19:56:07 GMT
Thanks for the Merced River info Sean.

Small shallow crankbait in Minnow, Light Crawdad, and Baby Bass produce a nice number of fish.
Small live minnows also catch a lot of fish including young stripers up 16" |
