You have to fish the West fork if you want to have any success. There are several pools and I have never been skunked, and thats using flies. You cant miss with bait on that fork. If the flows are high, move to the West fork.

The San Gabriel River is actually in L.A. County. I was at the East fork on Sunday Jan 30th. No luck. The water was running very, very fast from the rain and melting snow. Many, many rocks. I got snagged on almost every cast, even though I was using a very small weight (with salmon eggs). Lost my rig 4 or 5 times in 45 minutes. Had to tie a new rig. Very frustrating. Much of the East fork is private (at least that's what the signs say). The water is running too fast right now. And there are no big pools where the fish can rest. The stream bed is flat and chock full of rocks. Nothing but rocks. I wish they would make some pools for us fishermen. A difficult stream to fish right now.
