Blown out. Really muddy with more rain expected tomorrow night. Something was said about there being some fish around Johnson's Beach but it will be awhile before it clears up enough to get serious.

Looking for tips on fishing Lake Sonoma for cats. I do good under the bridge by the dam at night in the summer but have never tried winter months.Do they still bite in cold water? If so what bait is best?

Good deal ! The fishing this year was definitely nothing to get terribly excited about. From what I've heard, an occasional fish is bring caught now but the season is pretty much over. Have fun in Central America and that sounds good about the coffee when you get back.

I didn't get the time to go. I was hoping to get out and fish the Russian, just got busy.
I am heading to central america. I'll touch base with you in about 6 weeks, maybe then we can finally grab a cup of joe?

Yeah, in addition to a sizable run of steelhead, the Russian also has a widely variable run of Chinook and a very small run of Coho. I fished for Chinook on the Russian years ago but haven't in recent years.
There are indeed two hatcheries, both of which are on dammed portions of the watershed. Warm Spring Hatchery is below Lake Sonoma on Dry Creek and Coyote Valley Hatchery is below Lake Mendocino on the East Fork of the Russian River. I've never been to the Coyote Valley hatchery but Warm Springs is quite a facility and definitely worth a stop when the fish are running(like right now).
Anytime on the fishing or coffee or drinking coffee while fishing !

so there's a king run on the russian as well? That's great to hear! Do you ever fish that run? It sounds like there are 2 hatcheries on the Russian? Lake Sonoma and ukiah?
I'll be heading over to the russian on the 20th or 21st to fish. I'll let you know how i do.
Maybe we can meet up one of these days and go fishing or just have a cup of coffee.

Depending on the year, the Russian River can be feast or famine in March. I stopped into the Lake Sonoma Hatchery last week and they have had a huge surge in the number of fish arriving in the last two weeks so this year may be shaping up to be a late season. If you get a chance, stop by the hatchery. The creek was absolutely loaded with some absolutely beautiful fish ! Too bad to hear that guys were harvesting them right and left at the mouth of Dry Creek, and even worse, that guys have been gigging and long-lining them in the shallows.
I have never fished above Hwy 128(I usually fish from the Wohler Bridge downstream) but you definitely can fish there. In fact, when the lower river is blown out, the stretch above Healdsburg can still be fishable. Whatever you do, check the river level before hand. Unlike many of the North Coast rivers, the Russian can stay muddy and unfishable for weeks after a rain event.

It's al from Napa River post. How's the Russian fish in March? I'd like to fish it on March 20th or 21st. How is the big "mossy" rock area on 101 north of the 128 west turn off? Do you know the area? there are turn outs and access points. Do you ever fish up that way or is it maybe closed to fishing?

Usually, I fish from the beach at the Monte Rio bridge or at Casini's closer to the mouth. I have had better luck at the bridge in recent years though.

BTW, if it makes a difference, I am 99.9% catch and release. I have had a few hemerage on me, so I kept them and charished their great taste!

That sounds promising! Where do you fish the Russian? I've heard there are some public access points? Not sure if anyone wants to share, but I can certainly point you in some spots on the Eel.

Drove out to the coast over the weekend and the river looked big and brown but the moth busted wide open so fresh fish should be making their way up. Looks like some more rough weather this week but "steelie green" may be just a couple weeks off.

Yes you freakin' hippy. Just got back to post this and saw your post below. I hooked 3, caught 1 steelhead. It was roughly 4 lbs. Big female (at least for the russian). How are you long haired smelly freaks doing on the eel? I heard it came up last sat/sun.
