Duck Valley
Mtn. View has about 7 to 8 inches of ice covered with 1 inch of hard snow. There were three anglers out there going after yellow perch. Two of the anglers reported on 6 perch in four hours and were smaller perch. However, they also had an underwater video camera and stated that they were seeing a lot of perch regardless of which hole they checked out. They just couldn’t get the fish to bite very hard. The other angler also reported slow fishing but he did catch one perch that was 13.25 inches and 1.2 pounds. He also caught four nice rainbows that he released back into the water.
Mtn. View campground is off and winterized for the year. It will reopen around the end of March.
If you catch any perch please do not throw them back into the waters.

DUCK VALLEY INDIAN RESERVATION
Fishing report for the week of 10/16/09 to 10/22/09

Fishing at Mountain View has really picked up this week. Anglers were reporting excellent catch rates with fish ranging from 12 to 16 inches. Some anglers caught trout up to 18 inches. At Billy Shaw, catch rates were high but many of the fish reported were small planters. Three anglers the biologist interviewed stated that they were getting into some larger fish hanging out in the shallower areas on the edge of the weeds. No anglers were reported at Sheep Creek.

All three reservoirs have been stocked and there should be an abundance of trout available to be caught.

The weeds have really receded well and the water is opened up again.

If you catch yellow perch, please do not release them back into the water.

We checked the ice on 3/13/09. The ice is still very firm and about 14 inches thick but as the days become gradually warmer, the ice may develop some softer areas. Be cautious when on the ice. While checking the ice, we talked with two anglers ice fishing near the dam. The two anglers said that fishing was very slow with only one or two bites in three hours. However, while interviewing the anglers one of them caught two fish in 5 minutes. Fish activity may be based on time of day. The anglers also stated that several relatives fish several days prior and had excellent fishing.

2/19/09

Due to the stormy weather earlier in the week, Mountain View Reservoir hasn’t seen too many anglers. Today (Thursday) we came upon two anglers that had been out at the reservoir fishing for two to three hours. They said that they were getting a good number of bites but the fish were biting very cautiously. They caught two fish up to that point, one being a nice, fat 18 incher.

The ice is about 15 to 16 inches in depth. Due to the warmer afternoons, there is about 5-6 inches of slushy snow on top of the ice, so be sure to wear waterproof boots.

It looks like the weather will be beautiful over the weekend. Here is a look at the forecast:

• 2/20/09 Friday: Partly cloudy. High 42F. Winds light and variable.
• 2/21/09 Saturday: Partly cloudy. High 38F. Winds E at 5 to 10 mph.
• 2/22/09 Sunday: Times of sun and clouds. Highs in the upper 30s and lows in the upper 20s.
• 2/23/09 Monday: Cloudy. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 30s.

We checked the ice on Thursday (2/12/09) near the dam. The ice was 10 to 12 inches with about two inches of snow on top. A few nights have been below zero and that has helped to harden the ice. Not an angler in sight…these are the days reserved for the hardiest of anglers. Looks like maybe it might be a little unsettled for the weekend, but the winds will be dying down. So, if your planning on coming down…..bring some extra layers and don’t forget to stop by the deli for a cup of joe when your finished at the lake.

Weather
• 2/13: Mostly cloudy with snow flurries and snow showers, especially in the afternoon. High 31F. Winds ESE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 60%.
• 2/13 night: Snow showers. Low 24F. Winds E at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 70%.

Three anglers were at MVR ice fishing. In a matter of two to three hours they caught 8 fish. One angler stated that late afternoon is the best time to catch fish. They were using corn for bait. The ice was about 18 inches at their spot and despite the warm days, the ice is staying hard from the colder nights.

We checked the ice at MVR reservoir on Wednesday December 31st. About 20 yards from the dam, the ice was 7 to 8” thick. The previous week we checked the ice near the boat ramp and found the ice there was only 3 inches. This indicates that the thickness differs over the entire reservoir, so use caution when walking on the ice.

In terms of fishing, two locals went ice fishing at Mountain View for an hour and a half. The two gentlemen caught 12 trout in that time period. They said the fish seemed to be hungry and feisty. The fish all were between 14 and 16 inches.

The weather has been somewhat warm lately with temperatures as high as 45 F on sunny days. It has also rained here at times.

Duck Valley Indian Reservation Fishing Report for 12/5/08

There have been a few anglers out fishing in the last week or two. Verbal reports indicate that the fishing was very good at Mountain View Reservoir during this period.

Currently, the ice has not formed on the reservoir except for the edges of the water and in some of the smaller bays. There is plenty of open water to fish and put boats in. If the weather becomes colder, we could see more ice forming. We will continue checking the ice once or twice per week.

Duck Valley Indian Reservation Fishing Report as of 11/4/08

The season at Lake Billy Shaw and Sheep Creek Reservoir is now closed. Mountain View will remain open throughout the year for fishing opportunities but the campground with the electrical sites and water spigots has been winterized. Anglers reported decent fishing during the last week of October. The few anglers out there were mostly trolling in small boats using flies such as leech patterns. Their catch rates were about 5 to 6 fish for the entire morning. Most of the fish they were catching were modest sized fish but they also reported catching some brood stock fish that were over 24 inches in length.

We expect ice to begin forming on Mountain View towards the end of the month but probably will not be thick enough for ice fishing until late December.
