Fishing Reports for Skagit Riverlogin to add a report
I dont like to fish the skajit river for salmon or steelhead, i like to fish for rainbow trout. most fish are from 8 to 16 inches bu i have caught fish from 17 to 20 and my biggest fish has been 22 inches. i use any sort of streamer fly.
For those of you planning a trip to the Skagit from out of town, be aware of the flooding waters. Today I checked out Young's bar and it was completely flooded up to the dike wall. It is supposed to crest tomorrow morning at 4am at about 31.5'. Monday I will be heading out to the Sauk and check things out. The steelhead should have moved up there by then through the high water.
Thanks Nick! That is good news. Get it while while it's hot folks!
Today I drove out to where Baker River feeds into the Skagit up in Concrete. At around 11am the fish were EVERYWHERE. I only had time to make a few casts with a spinner and got big hits every cast. Fish were jumping every 10 seconds as close as 1 foot from shore. Some of these fish looked to be large 15lb+ steelheads or chums, and others seemed to be smaller trout. The water wasn't as clear as I would expect for the lack of rains the past couple days.
i wonder if the pattern of heavy returns for the past several years has changed,I havent heard of any major runs this fall/winter yet ,any body else?
I caught two pearch and one large mouth bass. All about 5 pounds yesterday. I suggest that you use spiner baits and top water jigs for these kinds of fish on the skagit river basin.
one larger idea... the early rain was brought on by an abnormal early fall pattern. One big thing causes another...
One major factor that is traditionally different this year is the rainfall. that would affect the fish differently this year than in nearly every other yr. I suggest looking into how this would change what the fish would be doing this year.Ex.water temp.,river heght clarity etc.
Thanks for the report. Maybe someone can help solve your mystery.
So far the fishing is very slow this year on the lower to mid Skagit River. Tried everything from lure's, drifting, to plunking. All failed. Maybe global worming or polutetion is causeing the fish to stop feeding on there way up the river. It is a big mystery to me cause there are fish there. There just not stoping to feed.
