The Pilchuck is closing the 18th this year. The entire Snohomish system is closing the 18th except the Wallace and tokul cr will remain open... Check emergency rule changes at wdfw web site for all the details. Other closures are Stilly,Skagit and others....

Brendon 02/14/2010 21:28:49 GMT
So does the Pilchuck close on the 15th or the 28th? I heard it was going to be an early closure.

bald eagle 02/14/2010 18:03:09 GMT
Does anyone think there will be a chance a few natives will come in before the chuck closes this year Feb 28. Just wondering if I should give it one last shot and maybe come up with one there this year since I have not hooked any either. Fun trying though, what can you do? Good fishin to all see ya one another river.

busted 02/09/2010 04:03:19 GMT
fished above machias, and nothing. not sure if there are any fish in the system at all. what a shame.

jumpin 02/08/2010 03:01:51 GMT
I have not had a bite or seen even a gut pile for 3 years!
what a shame, it was haug heaven for years

Steelheadless in Snoho 02/08/2010 00:43:15 GMT
Fished the Chuck for the past 15 years and this is the worst season I can recall. Picked up three around x mas and nothing since. I have caught many fresh hatchery fish in Feb. Alot of beautiful natives as well in the past but don't see that happening this year. The river is to be closed next year and no fish were planted this year. Pretty much this is the end to the Pilchuck as a fishery! Next time you see a state official thank them for using our license and tax dollars designed for our fisheries wisely!

Brendon 02/07/2010 19:49:15 GMT
Has anyone caught anything in February?

Ed 01/21/2010 00:01:01 GMT
Fished from Dubuque to Three lakes. Waded the entire stretch and hit every nook and cranny. 2 miles of water and not a single take. Nothing. Been a very long time since I've been skunked! Gonna pretend this trip never took place... :)

stealhead 01/14/2010 22:48:41 GMT
fish bad

Frosty 01/14/2010 02:47:45 GMT
Yes, or wait for the water to clear up so they can see what you put in there.....

dale 01/12/2010 15:14:08 GMT
ive tried floating jigs, spoons and corkies by ok mill rd bridge still nothing!! time to move?

Dan 01/02/2010 18:59:42 GMT
Thanks again Frosty, I have been floatig jigs close to the banks near boulder. I will try drifting through them. What color corkie and yarn comcos working for you? I was out this morning also , I struck out fishing the 147th st. area, sorry you miseed yours , dont be mad at your wife. Thanks again, see ya out there tommorrow maybe.

Punjab 01/02/2010 04:02:55 GMT
I like fish

Frosty 01/02/2010 03:39:25 GMT
Slots are deeper spots behind rocks and along the banks. Sometimes they're hard to see but the fish will lay in them. I use corkie and yarn and drift it through them. When the water is low and clear you can find them then remember where they are. I missed a good fish this morning, my wife called my cell phone and while I was talking to her a fish took my gear. Got 4 big head shakes before he left laughing, never got the hook set. Wouldn't take it again either. That happens when you get distracted.

Brendon 01/02/2010 00:55:22 GMT
Fished it this morning with a vibrax. I got skunked. What should I use to better my success?

Joe 01/01/2010 07:19:30 GMT
In case someone else has been trying to figure out where the diversion dam is; it is next to the Water Treatment Plant off of the intersection of Menzel Lake Road and 24th St. NE.

Joe 01/01/2010 06:14:22 GMT
Does anyone know what street the diversion dam is on? Is the Machias run closed? Any information will be appreciated.

Dan 01/01/2010 01:28:05 GMT
Frosty, what do you mean by fish the slots? What area of the river do you say I should try? Ive been fishing areas with gravel and boulder with 1/8 oz. jigs and micro jigs of various colors under a float and have not had any luck. I sure appreciate your advice and I thank you for not being selfish with information. I have figured out how to catch some salmon but I need all the help that I can get with steelhead. Good fishin to ya.

Dan 12/31/2009 00:10:26 GMT
Thanks Ed and Frosty, See Ya out there.

Frosty 12/30/2009 15:20:11 GMT
I caught a really nice cutthroat on Monday, chrome bright beautiful fish. Let him go. It was nice to see one in there, probably 18 inches. One more comment about the newspaper article by Heirman. There are certain groups who want to eliminate all hatchery plants in all rivers. These purists unfortunately have persuaded the fish and wildlife dept. that they represent the sportsmen of Washington. Their argument is the genetics of the fish in the river are getting messed up by hatchery fish. The Canadians have a good idea, catch wild fish from the river and spawn them in the hatchery, then you have local fish going back, no genetic problems. Heirman has decades of hands on experience in this stuff and wrote a book about it. Hatchery fish provide fishing opportunity and a chance to catch and eat a few fish. Without them and now without the opportunity to even catch and release wild fish on rivers like the sky, most of the hundreds of fishermen that used to come out, buy licenses, tackle, breakfast, guides, etc., don't bother any more. Fish and Wildlife is shooting themselves in the foot by listening to these purist groups. It seems like there's room for both approaches. Set aside rivers, like the Yakima for example, for wild fish only and put hatchery fish in others so the majority of fishermen can have a chance to catch a few and enjoy themselves. Anybody who was around the Snohomish this summer during the pink salmon run can clearly see there are lots of fishermen out there who are willing to spend a lot of money in the local economy on the sport if there are fish to catch.
Enough of that for now, sorry for the soapbox. The Pilchuck has been fishable for most of December this year which is unusual. It's usually high and muddy. There will still be fish showing up all the way to the end of the season, some of them will be big and mean, enjoy it while we still have it. I live on the river and fish it a lot and have for 25 years. Use small tackle when it's clear and low, fish the slots and bank edges. Lobby the Fish and Wildlife dept. to start getting opinions from the majority of fishermen, not just the vocal few purists who have their attention. Unfortunately they are the ones that attend the public meetings and send in the opinions when the questionnaires come out. Speak up and get your friends to do so too.

Ed 12/30/2009 07:29:04 GMT

Christmas Eve 1 hatchery buck.Day after Xmas 1 native hen (released) and 1 hatchery buck. Fishin is good all winter. Watch the weather and water levels. High water always brings in new fish.

Dan 12/29/2009 01:50:51 GMT
hey Ed or Frosty have you caught any fish on the pilchuck. I go fish it once a week and I have not come up with any steelhead, not seeing anybody out there either. Will it be better in a few weeks or what.

Thank, Good fishin to ya!

Ed 12/23/2009 07:37:54 GMT
Yes, there was an article on 12/13/09 but not a good one! The Pilchuck was not planted this year and will be closing early this season. Feb. 15 will be the last day to fish this wonderful little river till further notice. Sounds permanent... Good luck and enjoy the rest of this season for what may be the end for this legendary stream.

Frosty 12/14/2009 15:22:01 GMT
There was a good article in the Sunday, 12-13, Everett Herald by Bob Heirman from the Snohomish Sportsman's Club. He's been involved in local fisheries since the 1950's. Mentions fish planting on the Pilchuck and other local rivers. It's in the editorial section. Everyone who likes to steelhead fish should read it.

chum bum 12/08/2009 22:45:52 GMT
I live closer to the pil than the sky or wallace. Do any hatchery steelhead go up the pill or is it only natives. Trying to figure out what gear to use there. Any advice would be appreciated especilly from the locals, who only fish for steelhead there. Also is it better back near Granite or near machias. Thanks, see ya out there.

Frosty 12/05/2009 17:41:24 GMT
Fished it Saturday, didn't do any good but the water looks good. About froze my fingertips though, not used to that cold yet.

Oldtimer 03/17/2009 16:55:05 GMT
I've fished the Pilchuck for 25 years, every inch, and I live on the river. The reason experienced Pilchuck fishermen don't talk much is they don't have time for a bunch of loud mouth, profane, idiots who don't have the class to keep their mouth shut. Stay on the Green, or the coast, or the Skykomish please.

slot slut 03/10/2009 06:51:33 GMT
Rite on drunk bunk there is another real fisherman out there these othe guys are just a bunch of cry babys that don't have a clue. Let's get together and fish sometime. the only thing I river fish for are steelhead.

drunk bunk 03/04/2009 05:08:45 GMT
as of june 1st. Ime sitting at 38 hatchery fish on two catch records. from the green. I've also released 22 natives. biggest at or around 23-25lbs. And this isn't Bullshit. If you know what you are doing THESE #'S are quite possible. All my fish came from one river.

I lov the Pil 01/16/2009 23:27:06 GMT
So I've lived within 100 yards of the Pilchuck near OK Mill for two years now, what are some good rigs to use for the steelies?

pil boy 01/13/2009 09:33:31 GMT

garad 01/11/2009 12:09:51 GMT

pil boy 12/26/2008 21:38:07 GMT
kris, do the natives tend to beat the brats back into the pilchuck, caught 3 of 4 were native so far this year exactly opposite of last year

pil boy 12/26/2008 21:33:17 GMT
i was right and wrong i can deal with that.

kris 12/23/2008 11:28:39 GMT
It's actually logging roads, (designed to perpetuate deforestation), that are later used BY 4x4's......take if from me.....I'm a Fisheries Biologist, and an Entomologist....just the facts. You can add roughly 60lbs. of silt A YEAR to the river per tree that is removed....there is your question as to why some of these rivers are never, ever "clean"

pil boy 12/22/2008 10:31:40 GMT
wtf you talkin about, 4x4 are the not the muddy reason, its clearing trees, heavy rains, snow run-off,land slides not trucks lol.

Arjay 12/20/2008 18:16:24 GMT
Find a river that is extremley muddy and you know that some red neck is upstream from you doing some Muddin with his 4x4 truck.. its killing our rivers oh well no one cares....Sad!

pil boy 12/13/2008 11:05:38 GMT
just find a bridge crossing theres about 5 or 6

derek sutherland 12/03/2008 09:31:12 GMT
I heard stealhead just opened on the pilchuck and am

for snohomish?

raymo 12/03/2008 08:44:19 GMT

andy 11/10/2008 00:24:28 GMT
what works for trout in the pilchuck. never fished it.

Yo 06/16/2008 10:50:36 GMT
It's in the regs:
TROUT Dec. 1-Feb. 28 Min. size 14". Daily limit 2.
Other Game Fish Dec. 1-Feb. 28 Statewide min. size/daily limit.

brendon 06/14/2008 21:02:11 GMT
I can't find anywhere in the fishing rules that says you can fish it anytime but December through February. Can you fish during the summer?

Tyler 05/30/2008 21:05:12 GMT
I heard "Pilchuck" means "Red Blood" is that true? and connecting with red blood this is why it is called that: on each side of the river there were 2 indian tribes and they had wars and a bunch of indians died in it.

sean 04/23/2008 11:40:30 GMT
when do the salmon run

Yo 02/26/2008 14:22:50 GMT

Joe 02/12/2008 14:15:44 GMT
I lost a nice one today. it was about 8-9 pounds. It hit a corkie and yarn. Has anyone else been hitting fish?

Paul 02/09/2008 17:35:24 GMT
When the water was low, or now when it’s high and blown?

the man 02/07/2008 15:51:46 GMT
its bean hot fishing down at the mouth

Paul 02/07/2008 09:07:24 GMT
Just remember be respectful of people’s property, but when it all boils down people don't own the water. If you stay in the river legally you can walk up or down for miles.

zman 02/06/2008 16:45:50 GMT
paul, thanks.... just being from hawaii, your taught not to walk in other peoples property.... just dont know the area to well and dont want to get people upset if im in there back yard fishing...and to steve, i agree, im learning the pholchuck because i dont want to fish the crowded places like reiter... so and tips on how to fish it like yo usay?

Paul 02/06/2008 11:28:06 GMT
Couldn't agree with you more Steve. And for Zman it sounds like you already have two good starting points, all you need to do is go put in the time, and remember release the Natives. Good luck!

steve 02/05/2008 20:40:46 GMT
A tiny river with such few fish does not need more pressure. And you locals certainly don't want the crowd, right? Teach them "how", but not "where" please. Folks should learn access and holes on their own. Not advertised on the net. Thanks.

zman 02/05/2008 16:39:50 GMT
ryan, thanks bud dont like reiter but ive fished the big eddy... ive caught 3 steelhead this year. im getting to understand it. i just live so close to the philchuck.. id just like to know where the access is on the river.. i can fish it everyday. just dont want to end up in the wrong back yard. all i know is debuque road and lochsley. thanks for the reply and the heads up about the email addy

Paul 02/05/2008 13:01:39 GMT
Mr. Smith thanks for the response. Unfortunately I am only able to fish the river one or two days a week. But over the last few years I have consistently averaged around 6 fish in a season. It's good to know that your taking advantage of your living location! I envy you!!!!!! I don't normally fish spinners but I will give them a try, the few steelhead that I have hooked on them have been explosive fighters. See ya on the river!

Ryan 02/05/2008 07:30:19 GMT
zman..The Pilchuck is a great river to fish. It's one that takes a long time to learn and requires a pretty good amount of fishing skill and experience to be successful. If you are trying to learn to catch a steelhead maybe you should go to Reiter on the Skykomish and stand next to the other guys until you understand the basics. I live on the Pilchuck and have fished it for 20 years, I'm still learning but that's all part of the experience. PS-get a new email name that shows a little more class.

tl smith 02/04/2008 23:45:36 GMT
I live on and fish the upper part of the river. I fish 3 or 4 days a week, 4 to 6 hours a day. Eggs and pink yarn with either a slinky or dink float on the upstream hike and then coming down I use a #3 or #4 french blade style spinner that I make myself. 80% of the fish are on the eggs and yarn. I too, know of the Indians. I've heard them but never spotted one. Be careful, and for gods sake, don't teach them how to steelhead fish.

zman 02/04/2008 20:57:46 GMT
p...
y does that alarm you?

arnold 02/04/2008 14:23:14 GMT
how do i catch fish. what do i use.

Paul 02/04/2008 09:48:36 GMT
Mr.Smith, that is great. I dont think that I have heard a report that good from any of these local rivers in a very very very long time, WAY TO GO. I do have two questions for you, What is the general area of the river that you fish, And how many days did you put in for those 14 steelhead.

zman 01/31/2008 19:45:30 GMT
any helpful hints will help.... i live in lake stevens and would love to hit the pilchuck everyday, just dont know where to hit it at....email me anigavlicker@yahoo.com thanks and aloha

zman 01/31/2008 19:42:07 GMT

kurt 01/27/2008 18:45:18 GMT
uh mr. smith theres no such thing as a NATIVE HATCHERY STEELHEAD, its either native or hatchery not both.

t.l. smith 01/13/2008 00:07:31 GMT
on 12/1 probably 10 coho from dark to semi bright, and one native hatchery steelhead. On 12/7 one 10 lb. hatchery fish. A hen with good roe. On 12/31 1 native 12 lb., and two nice natives by another good fisherman fishing along thr other side. On 1/13 another nice native plunking. I live on the river and believe this is as good ayear as any.

good luck

On 12/31 1 native 12 lb., and two nice natives by another good fisherman fishing along thr other side. On 1/13 another nice native plunking. I live on the river and believe this is as good ayear as any.

good luck

Wasn't fishing on 12/9 like Ryan, but saw quite a few reds running up Bunk-Foss creek.

Ryan 12/10/2007 10:36:12 GMT
I fished 12-09 just upstream from Dubuque Rd. River is a little colored but looks good. Had one good hit but I was daydreaming and missed it. Using a birdie drifter and pink yarn.

Can you fish for humpy salmon in the Pilchuck in season?

pnwguy 06/03/2007 15:28:29 GMT
The Washington DNR says, "These Northwest Region sites and trails are open year-round, but typically inaccessible from October 15 to June or July, due to snow in the higher elevations."

Does Pilchuck Park Open Season start June 1st or December 1st?

Paul 04/25/2007 15:12:16 GMT
This is for the questions bellow: I have hooked a few steelhead fishing from the Pilchuck Park, its low in the river so I think the fish swim by, and don't hang out long to be caught. I fish the river almost daily (during the season of course) there are a few good holes in this stretch that are always worth a cast or two. As far as what to use; all the usual will work, I like to drift fish with just enough pencil lead to touch bottom 4 to 5 times in a cast. I like using corkie and shrimp combo, but that?s just a good old stand by for me. If you haven?t fished for steelhead to much I would start out casting a float and jig combo! Good luck and tell me how do!

i hooked a steelhead today but lost it. it was near an old bridge that had washed away on Skinner Road.this fish would have been an easy keeper(had i caught it)

joe 12/17/2005 17:34:24 GMT
If anyone has any information on where to fish the river, or what to use please share. Anyone catching steelhead?

Ryan 12/15/2005 16:05:52 GMT
are the steelhead in yet?

Marco 12/13/2005 20:59:46 GMT
I was fishing way downstream on the pilchuck river. seems more like a stream. But i had cought a 19" cutthroat trout, nice fish, still early in the season. But it was on the 1st of December... A great opening day catch I must say! Pulled it in with a single hook roostertail spinner in a side bank under/around some hanging brush casting from shore, no waiters.

Thanks for the info Scully.

Scully 05/27/2005 10:01:32 GMT
The diversion dam is located north of Lake Roesiger a long ways from Snohomish. Some good holes up around Granit Falls.

Ray, here's my recommendation. Go to the cosest fishing shop near where you want to fish and ask a local. It'll take you five minutes and you'll get other great information. That's one thing I hate about the regs, sometimes you need to be local in order to know what some of the landmarks are. Once you get that great information come back and tell us about how it went!

ray 02/15/2005 18:46:14 GMT
Could someone please tell me where is the Snohomish City Diversion Dam located so that one can determine what is open to fish on the Pilchuck River? thx

Kalen 02/12/2005 21:26:39 GMT
No, I haven't found any good infomation about the Pilchuch Park for Steelhead yet.

Jim 02/09/2005 16:33:17 GMT
Kalen, have you found any good information out there about Pilchuck Park for steelhead?

Kalen 02/04/2005 11:03:50 GMT
Is there good Fishong at Pilchuck Park For Steelhead. Does anyone know what I should use or where any good spots are that they could tell me about.

rob 01/28/2005 17:01:18 GMT
the probably wasn't a small trout but most likely a steelhead. I have fished it for almost 30 years and the times that it is opened has always been the same.

Kalen 01/21/2005 14:11:13 GMT
Ooops! I was at my moms boyfriend's football practice and i live in kirkland

Jim 01/14/2005 10:27:16 GMT
You are correct. I always get confused with Washington regs becuase of the odd season (May of one year to April of the next year). Do any other states do that supidity? Does anyone know why Washington doesn't use a calandar year? Thanks Scully for the correction.

Scully 01/14/2005 09:10:04 GMT
Ah but the season is Dec.1-Feb.28th that report came in in October. Think about it.

Jim 01/13/2005 11:16:57 GMT
"CLOSED WATERS - from 500' downstream of the Snohomish City Diversion Dam upstream."
Not the whole river. Also, it was not closed when Kalen put in the report on 10/12/2004!

Scully 01/13/2005 10:46:20 GMT
Did you know that the Pilchuck is closed then? read your regs!

Kalen 10/12/2004 14:08:31 GMT
Fished for an hour or two and cought 1 small trout on powerbait
