The Winters are in and starting to show in numbers. Many 10-15lb fish came out this weekend from Reiter and the 1000 yards downstream.

Let's all show a little drift and cast courtesy guys! If you want to stand in the middle and toss to the other side, be aware of fisherman on the other side. Also, when the crowds start to show, limit your drift distance to prevent tangle-ups!!

I've had my chances this week. Lost a big one around 15 lbs midweek on a size 15 red bodied Panther Martin with a gold blade. Last night, threw out a blue and white marabu jig rig on a short 12 lb mono attached to braid line. Felt a tick and set the hook. Bam! Rod bent double and sang. Ten minutes later, got it close but the hook straightened out on me. Bleep! Guess I need to get stronger jigs! Fish was easily 15 lbs....closer to 20. Possibly could have been an early chum which would have to be thrown back anyway. Chums are off limits this year.

Thing I've noticed is that you want to go our fishing after a good rain and the water is higher and on the drop. This puts them on the bite. When it's low and clearer, they don't seem to bite as much. Only bite got yesterday was that fish right before dark. I also feel it's important to add scents. Now with jigs, I'll put scent on the line near the jig and carefully on the chenille before the marabu. The oil will ruin the marabu action if it gets on it.

Chinook salmon retention ends July 6 on the Skykomish River

Action: Close chinook salmon retention on the Skykomish River.

Effective date: July 6 through July 31, 2010.

Species affected: Chinook salmon

Location: Skykomish River from the mouth upstream to the Wallace River.

Reason for action: Chinook brood stock collection at the Wallace River Hatchery is well behind the goal of 3,200. As of June 29, only 547 chinook brood stock have been trapped at the hatchery. The closure of the selective chinook sport fishery on the Skykomish River is necessary in order to fulfill brood stock collection requirements. If the brood stock collection goal is met prior to July 31, the Skykomish River selective chinook sport fishery may resume.

Other information: The Skykomish River from the mouth upstream to the Wallace River will remain open for hatchery summer steelhead and all other game fish.

Information contact: Jennifer Whitney, Region 4 Fish Manager (425) 775-1311

I have been fishing about 10 miles west of Index(close to Baring) on the Sky. I love the spot because its quiet and I am the only one here. I have not caught a fish yet. Am I too far west on the river? Do the fish ever reach the Baring area?
