and my hope is many others will come down here and there......maybe finding ways to buy their electricity from larger dams...........

fishing.....being out on the water is good for everyone ...it's calming......fun / relaxing and will resolve some of societies problems........as they say "fish make people happy".....

We need more happy people...............

CAKen 05/08/2008 06:02:08 GMT
yep you are correct......and we now have many going to Alaska trying to find one that size......

If you dam river......you can forget about big fish.....or really any kind of consistent fish runs........many parts of the US went "dam" crazy for years........

Fact is.......in the state of WA alone......there are so many classic salmon and steelhead rivers.....that if you took out the dams.......there wouldn't be enough time in anyone's life to fish them all........

Elwha will finally set an example.......what a neat thing it will be for the future to see a river of this kind able to flow free..........

jeff 05/07/2008 23:05:48 GMT
btw I remember reading that the elwha had a race of kings that went to 100 pounds.

Last minute reminder about the CCA meeting tonight...

Muljat Group Realtors on Lakeway at 7:00pm

Hope to see you there.

CAKen 05/05/2008 22:53:32 GMT
I've only been on that river one day......but I certainly wanted to come back and envy those who were able to spend time like you did.....that is such a "nice size" river.....the part we floated was mid size and just plain pretty......water was blueish / green clear......ice cold and some deep holes along the way. It is perfect for steelhead.......

Take that dam out......give it a few years......and Oregon should have one of the better salmon/steelhead rivers.....

RM 05/05/2008 22:34:46 GMT
I spent a lot of years on the Rouge as a young boy during summer break from school,I was taught how to fish the river down there by my grandfather. Lots of great memory's of him carrying us kids on his back threw the shallows of the rivers down there.I really miss those days!

CAKen 05/05/2008 22:26:41 GMT
RM....one correction here on my date.......things may be well underway now on that dam removal.....and that 09 date I mentioned may be when they hope to have it completely finished......I know it takes a few years to get things in place and sometimes there are some delays here and there....but for anyone fishing that river.....it should make a huge difference......

CAKen 05/05/2008 22:11:46 GMT
slated to begin late 09 / early 10.

Good reminder of that one RM.......floated that river on a Christmas break in 1990 with my step son. Used a guide that day but we didn't get anything.......and it's really a river that should be producing much like many of ours.....

I think once the Elwha project gets underway.....and everyone can see that something this size can be done....more will follow. I know there has been many smaller dams taken down across the US......but nothing this size.......and what a wonderful thing this is.

One shouldn't have to fly to Alaska to get great fishing......we have so many classic steelhead / salmon streams and rivers from the Sacramento river on up........

RM 05/05/2008 21:30:16 GMT
@CAKen- Do you know the status on the Savage Rapids dam on the Rouge river in southern Oregon? I think that one is being removed also,I have not heard much lately on that dam.

CAKen 05/05/2008 20:55:25 GMT
btw.....and speaking of my comment on dams......I am very happy to see the Elwha river take out their 2...... coming up I guess here in 08......

It's a step in the right direction and for future generations it will be great.....it'll take what? ....maybe 15 years or so to get that river back to some respectability.......but if all goes okay here in 08.....maybe many more will come down here and there. Yes....there are problems with flooding.....water conservation......electricity needs.......but having a river potentially restored (somewhat)....in my lifetime will be fun to watch. According to what I have read....the indians will not net the river until it's back.....so another positive step.

I can't imagine what kind of tourism that will also generate for folks in the area........

Here's raising a glass of some fine cabernat that more dams get "damned" in the near future.......free flowing rivers...

CAKen 05/02/2008 13:05:15 GMT
lack of accountability.........that would be great if someone (or groups)....were always watching.....looking over their shoulders......and fish traps (or any other selective process).....where the natives were left alone would help greatly......

I read Jason's blogs......and that float you guys make on the upper Nooksack was incredible back in the mid 60s and mid 70s........there is so much fishable water it's nuts.........we kept steelhead back then ....but I was a kid and grandpa rules.....but after 3 or 4.....he'd smash the barb and let them go.....and on some days.......with the fight in these fish.......we were all tired after 3 or 4....so home we went.....

Back to the Indians.....and how do we know the 50/50?...we don't. And for the sports guys......when a river is closed....it's closed......so I'd love see enforement really take a front page in the future.......

EM 05/02/2008 11:22:20 GMT
But he might not have known it as he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1978. This is the basis of the Samish Tribes dispute of being excluded in treaty fishing rights from Boldt's 1979 decision. I hope, one day, we can prove that he ignored this condition four years prior.

Yep, you have to wonder if the guy was all there. I am not against Tribal fishing; just the schedules, the manner in which it is done and the lack of accountability in the numbers harvested.

CAKen 05/02/2008 10:04:13 GMT
and what I meant by that.....is he would have seen how much things have declined and would most likely have re-thought things.......

but then maybe not......under the table $ has swayed more than 1 judge............

CAKen 05/02/2008 09:51:23 GMT
I wish Judge Bolt could have done his ruling about 10 years ago.......

thanks for your information here...............

EM 05/02/2008 08:38:33 GMT
The problem with hatched fish is that you only expect to see about a 1% return...could be a little higher in some cases. If you have 175k hatchery steelhead, you would only expect to see about 1750 back.

With netting in full swing and rec fishing impacts, doesn't leave many fish to return for egg take.

The hatched steelhead do not have good ocean survival rates. The ones that do return but stray could potentially take up increasingly rare good spawning ground in competition with our wild fish. Or worse yet, take a walk on the wild side causing further demise of good genetic pool. Hatched steelhead are also known for their poor reproductive performance.

Hatchery practices are evolving...we shall see.

Great house. That is a really beautiful area.

CAKen 05/01/2008 17:50:36 GMT
and to add....here's the link on that house in Deming.....

http://www.trulia.com/property/1044557119-2290-Mosquito-Lake-Rd-Deming-WA

or just google the address........

fun stuff............

CAKen 05/01/2008 17:09:12 GMT
moving on here.....hacthery situation.....and the 160.

My assumption is that the hatchery gets most all that come through there......correct? That # seems awful low to me and I wonder about who is doing the counting and the accuracy......if only 160 returned........we are in more trouble than I thought.......it should be much higher and the river should never have to be closed to get them......

I wish 1 year our gov could pay the Indians not to net at all......which if that news got out......would bring a bunch more sports fisherman than normal......but if that would occur......I'd love to compare the #s.......

With the habitat situation as it is.......the hatchery program is good........certainly not want any of us really want......but we are today where we are.......

My own research of smolts released from the hatchery is around 175,000 ( if that is correct).......and if that # has been consistent with steelhead.....then what is the expected # of returners? Something just doesn't add up right to me....

CAKen 05/01/2008 16:56:04 GMT
Marbelmount area has some interesting homes that I see .....listed on the net.......both in the mid 200s.....and being right along the river would be great........heck......I'd even take something smaller and fix it up nice......

On Mosquito Lake road......Windemere has some and 1 that is just lovely......listing price $499,000......which would be much more that I need (space wise)...and (price wise).....but that small creek running in through the back area was something I'd love......my preference would be to stay on the Nooksack but you may be right about the Skagit...........bigger area......more river....with smaller rivers running into it......plus an hour less to some other great spots.....

Well for those that now have that life......hats off to ya........nothing like walking a small ways.....setting up a lawn chair and plunking (for those that like that)......

EM 05/01/2008 13:31:31 GMT
I agree...I like the fly. I have done my share of both and just plain love being on the waters; fresh, salt, moving, still...doesn't matter.

Boy, don't know where you're at but the prices here in Whatcom are still just plain crazy.

You might have better luck down in Skagit plus you have the Suiattle, Cascade, Baker and Sauk Rivers. You would also be closer to the Stilly and others just to name a few. Then, there's the salt. We have fair numbers of SRC and bull/dolly in some areas.

If you like the flies, there are also the upper reaches of the rivers and small streams where you can fish a 2 or 3wt for, what some call, minnows...they're actually small trouts. Hah!

There were some decent prices on a little street whose name I don't know but near the South Faber's take-out on the Skagit if I remember right.

The Kendall Creek hatchery area is still the same except for a huge sweeper across the river there. The hatchery is obviously still active but not as much as it was in the past from my understanding. They got about 160 winter hatchery steelhead back this year. The North Fork was closed for some period because they were worried about not getting enough fish back. But they did and it was reopened.

The Lummi Nation is also still active in the hatchery program too; however, I have not been able to find any numbers relating to their efforts. I do not think they are required to share such.

The wild thing to me this year has been the low flows on all the rivers. More snow than rain. Just three days ago the snow level dropped again to about 750ft. Should be a whopping big run off when it warms up.

Ed

CAKen 05/01/2008 12:45:43 GMT
flies are good......and I'll take that one hook-up over any #s caught by gear guys........those "tugs" are like nothing in this world......

and about 80% of each day spent fishing is truly nature....and the surroundings......it's overwhelming......and peaceful.....it adds years to your life........I have about 10 more years flying back and forth......then want to buy something along either the Nooksack or Skagit........I look at some of the homes along both (internet photos)......and I'd be happy to have a small creek running through my backyard.

EM 05/01/2008 07:20:33 GMT
Zero on the Sauk those trips...but we're swinging flies which is pretty much a conservation effort in itself.

Magnificent river though.... I had a huge double tug in March on the Skagit though. I was like holy crap. Uhhhhhh! What just happened?

Looking forward to next September already. I'm probably one of the few that is really sad to see the end of winter.

I guess I'll live though. The vacuum-sealed Dungeness stock in my freezer is pretty depleted and July is just around the corner. And, summer steelhead season is even closer.

Ed

RM 05/01/2008 06:50:27 GMT
The Sauk tribe runs a hatchery program on the river, but lately the numbers of hatchery steelhead have been way down. I don't think they are planting good numbers any more.

CAKen 04/30/2008 22:55:52 GMT
and about hatheries......anyone been up to the Kendall Creek one lately (or the past year or 2)? I haven't been there for awhile so I was wondering what it looked like at this time......they have a website but I couldn't find any photos.

They release the info on how many smolts are put into the Nooksack each year.....and with the #s being what they are........we should have a lot more returning than what it seems (steelhead).........I know there are problems and nets gets them too......but I am encouraged when I do the reading on this subject. I assume the Lummis are also (and have been)......active with their hatchery program.....correct?

CAKen 04/30/2008 22:45:55 GMT
yea....the Skagit is a great river.....with so much water and other rivers and streams running into it.....your comment about "good luck".....had me wondering.......I thought the hatchery program was doing okay throughout the system........has it gotten tougher to land or find any of these beauties?

RM 04/30/2008 22:31:45 GMT
Looking at the new reg's for 2008-09 looks like the state made all fishing on the Sauk river catch&release June 1st to April 30th and selective gear rules on all fish.except you can keep hatchery steelhead limit 2 fish. "good luck catching hatchery steelhead on the Sauk"
This is a good start in protecting threatened fish on this great river.

RM 04/30/2008 18:24:25 GMT
Yes I fish the Skagit for salmon in June and part of July in and above the Rockport area...Then down by Concrete for the sockeye run headed for the Baker river. Then stay home on the "good old" Nooksack September and October.November and December I'll be back on the Skagit looking for some native hook nose silvers. After that it's here and there for steelhead.

Ed- Up on the Sauk how was the fishing and the catching?

EM 04/30/2008 09:08:09 GMT
The Boldt decision purely affected the fisheries in the States. The North of Falcon process is where it is decided "who gets what". You can read about it at the link below.

http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/northfalcon/index.htm

I do not know if there are Tribes on the Fraser or Vedder.

That being said, Canada has the same, if not worse, mentality about their First Nation. Nobody wants to confront the problem of their over and non-selective harvesting.

The fact is, at this time, we just do not have a sustainable resource in our PNW fishery to support non-selective commercial and treaty harvest methods and numbers.

The Hoh still has Catch n Kill rec fishery as well as the Hoh Tribe netting the mouth but yet again that river did not meet escapement for its wild steelhead.

120,000 Chinook by-catch in the Pollock fishery- link below:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004173286_salmon09m.html

On a lighter note, the Skagit and Sauk are indeed beautiful. We floated and fished the Sauk from Darrington to the 530 bridge and 530 to Government bridge closing weekend. Man, I can't wait to get back down there.

RM...see you on the 7th...Excellent.

Ed

anybody know anything about an artificial reef at hat island

CAKen 04/30/2008 00:32:06 GMT
well RM....that's probably good you don't more about the Vedder....shows me you are fishing the Nooksack and that's encouraging.......:)

The reason I asked is from what I read.....I'm an avid reader of all things fishing........but I also realize there is much misinformation out there also......and some guys can go fishing 5 days......catch 2......and declare a river is hot.......

I also was wondering if Judge Bolts decision also affected Canada.......as I am not sure on that one......2ndly......you mentioned the upper Skagit and the Sauk..........that whole area is beautiful and is that the general area you fish for the Salmon runs? Marblemount? Rockport?......thanks...

RM 04/29/2008 22:32:12 GMT
@CAKen-I don't know about the Vedder program,I do know the Fraser river has had some pretty low returns the last few years. The sockeye run has been real poor on that river.
Sorry I was not more help with the question...Anyone out there with more info for CAKen?

RM 04/29/2008 21:29:09 GMT
I'm with Ed on this one...you can have great habitat but if all large fish are wiped out in gill nets ,your left with smaller weaker fish that will not sustain the run.
I was reading the new reg's for this year. It's looking pretty good for salmon this year... A 4 fish limit on hatchery king's on the Skagit starting June 1st to the 15th of July."Not Bad"

See you at the next meeting Ed.

CAKen 04/29/2008 19:12:06 GMT
question for the board.......why does the Vedder produce like it does every year? It's a smallish type river and has to be the #1 river for bank fishing.......do the Indians net the mouth?.....anyone?.......and are the Indians netting the Fraser?....thanks

EM 04/29/2008 10:36:59 GMT
Our primary problems, in my humble opinion, are harvest (primarily commercial but treaty too in some cases) and habitat.

The way the South Fork of the Nooksack has been logged, we are headed towards (if not already there) a Deer Creek travesty. Just last year the South Fork was good to about 800cfs...it looks like a Louisiana ditch at 300cfs these days.

Next Coastal Conservation Association meeting is May 7th...be there if you can. It is at Muljat Group on Lakeway at 7:00pm.

Ed

CAKen 04/27/2008 22:10:26 GMT
If it was only the indians......I believe things would be okay.....the ocean was never meant for large commercial fishing the way we do it today.......and tear down the dams.....yeah I know......we all like electricity (cheap)....and the recreation lakes present.....plus all the irrigation it provides.........flood control etc......but dams kill fish.......the rivers and fish were doing just fine before all of this.

Plus the mentality to kill among sports fisherman has to be changed. Bait should never be used.....nor treble hooks....nor hooks with barbs. Most sports fisherman are not out there today because they need the food.....instead wanting to fill stringers with fish or get their picture taken with large fish(okay if fish released properly).......plus when a river is closed.....it's closed.......the enforcement (reality)....ir really non existent.......heck......call out the national guard to patrol the waters and make it a big big deal if anyone is caught poaching.......front page of the Herald.

Note: my comment on the dams of course is not practical as would be a mess to reverse all of that......sadly though.....the salmon and many other species paid the bill.

Peter Pitman 04/25/2008 22:39:40 GMT
Alaska has such great fisheries because they shut down fishing for 5 years--commercial, tribal and sporting--and after this, it gave plenty of time for the runs to recover. I think the whole west coast needs to adopt what Alaska did, because if we don't too something now--it will be too late to even stand a chance. Being a Western Washington University student, and a member of Puget Sound Anglers, I am well aware of the need for fishing reform, yet many people are too blind to realize it. According to the WDFW sports fisherman only harvest less than 15% of the available fish to keep. The commercial takes up the most, while indian tribes do their share of damage as well. Regardless of who is to blame, action needs to be taken very soon--if we have any hopes of fishing for salmon in this lifetime, as well as our children's. This issue is quite serious, yet many people fail to see how significant over-fishing has become--especially with all these 'health eating' websites that say to eat 'wild salmon' only and say to eat it 3 times a week. These pathetic advertisements are ruining our culture and destroying fishing on the west coast for years to come.

CAKen 04/20/2008 15:42:44 GMT
Fishing season opens next Sat across the Eastern Sierra......and one of the days that is cold and fun.....fish have been resting in all Lakes and streams for 6 months......I'll be on Bishop Creek (South Fork)....at daylight......usually some snow trudging around and wind can pick up......creek is stocked but there are wild native browns and some Alpers trophies left over from last year......it's usually hon stop action as you move up the creek.....most are small.......but each year I land a couple in the 2 pound range and usually at least one 3 - 4. Only the hardcores will be out at the time I get there so there is not a lot of pressure......and unlike some streams that are more level.....this one is a faster running creek with some great pools......log jams etc. Limit is 5 but I catch and release with barbless.......

Ed Megill 04/17/2008 10:34:32 GMT
Hi RM,
Jason and I did extend invitations to the Nooksack tribe for the initial meeting; however, no one, to the best of my knowledge, attended.

We will definitely circle back around and try to get both the Lummi and Nooksack tribes involved. I was thinking of a March or April '09 Festival of the Nooksack too where cleanup and celebration of our home river occurred.

I met with a WDFW officer earlier this week. He pulled an approximately 6 x 7 x 4 pile of derelict nets from the lower Nooksack that morning.

An Eyes in the Woods program, Sauk/Stilly breakins, lack of funding for enforcement, South Fork Nooksack logging practices and many other issues were discussed.

I did not find out about fines on poaching as we had a lot of other things to discuss.

If anyone is interested in volunteering to get stuff done on our river, let me know. emegill@cablespeed.com.

I will fill you in on my list of concerns. You can add your own and I'll share my plan.

Hope to see you tonight.
Ed

WDFW Closes spring chinook fishing on the Chehalis river do to poor returns. It will remain closed threw spring and summer. WDFW say only 900 fish returning this year, well below the 1400 needed for spawning.

RM 04/14/2008 22:36:07 GMT
@GH- That's not just commercial fishing ,it's all fishing sport fishing also. This collapse is mainly on the Sacramento river system...and no one has any idea why. Lot's of finger pointing going on like poor habitat and poor ocean condisions, and poor freshwater conditions...But not a word about overharvest.I would guess it would be harder to get million's of dollars for a commercial fishing bail out if you added in the over harvest of these fish!
Like I said before...4th highest commercial catch on record in 2007 in Alaska, very poor returns in WA,OR,CA IN 2007.Now a full ban on fishing from Mexico to Astoria Oregon. It's time we take a look at how we harvest the fish for once.
This will effect Washington as well, with heavy cut backs in fishing in the sound and our local rivers.

GH 04/14/2008 20:50:28 GMT
I saw on the national news that the salmon season for the commercial guys has been shut down from oregon to cali. TV said the numbers are down from 1.5 million catchable fish a few years ago to only 35,000. video here:
No 'upstream' for salmon fishermen

April 14: In an effort to save Pacific Chinook salmon, officials have ordered that salmon fishing cease along the West Coast, putting 1,000 fishermen out of work. NBC's John Larson reports.

RM 04/14/2008 18:52:41 GMT
Ed- Has the Nooksack or Lummi tribes shown any interest in attending the meeting on the 17th? I would think the tribes would be very interested in rebuilding fish stocks in the river as well as the sport fishermen.

Ed Megill 04/14/2008 10:06:11 GMT
I don't know but I will ask about the fines. Agreed, it should be tripled and, in my opinion, with loss of future license opportunity in some cases.

The nets on the river were abandoned/derelict Tribal nets. They were legal Tribal nets but washed away by high water or forgotten.

Occasionally, we found nets that were illegally placed or placed on days where the Tribal fishery was closed; but, not very often.

These were reported and, in most cases, promptly removed. If there were fish in the nets, they were given to the Nooksack Tribal elders.

RM 04/13/2008 22:36:57 GMT
That's a good question! In all the years fishing the Nooksack I have seen two fish&game officer's on the river, and I have never been checked.Inforcement on the river is not real high on the to do list by the state of Washington.

CAKen 04/13/2008 21:23:35 GMT
question.......what is the current fine for poaching? Whatever it is......it should be tripled or more.......

Also....angleronthefly has mentioned illegal nets. How much of a problem is this? Something I just hate to see..

Ed Megill 04/13/2008 12:09:45 GMT
I was on the river last Thursday getting a buddy on the styx. We reported a guy poaching and spoke with one of the WDFW officers. They are out there. Heard another report of someone getting a hefty fine for the CnR poacher season.

The CCA PNW meeting that RM spoke of is so important to us here in the PNW. Frank Muljat has been kind enough to let us use his conference room. Like RM said, the meeting is at the Muljat Group Realtors office on 4/17/2008 at 7:00pm.

You can find out more at www.angleronthefly.com.

I grew up in Texas. There were very, very few fish to be had because of the means the shrimpers netted...took all the Redfish.

The limit is now 10 redfish per day. Nobody keeps that many because everyone knows how lucky they are to have the Redfish back. The same goes for king and red snapper as well. This was all a result of CCA's actions and interventions.

Join CCA. They will make a difference.

Cheers, ed

RM 04/10/2008 20:41:42 GMT
On June 1st my "fishing" reports,if everything goes well will start up again.I'll fish the upper Skagit for early hatchery kings,if it opens. As for April/May I have to keep the "boss" happy and do some stuff around the house before the opener!
I'm also working on creating some new spinners that I think are going to work real well on kings and silvers this year, looking forward to the opener so I can give them a test run.

CAKen 04/09/2008 23:49:55 GMT
I grew up on the Nooksack (born in 58)....and was lucky enough to have a grandfather who loved fishing.....loved reading the water ...the veins .... the deep holes.....looking for the steelies / salmon... the old black and white photos are still fun..........gramps always spoke about the indians.....yet was a diehard plus friends with many of the farmers on private land....so it was never a trespass. There were also many days where the pure beauty of each fork or the river itself would make the day and getting a fish was just a bonus. After college I moved to So Cal for work.....got an offer to come down here from a company. Been here now for over 25 years and it's decent $....good living and all.....nice winter weather....but the crowded freeways....crime....smog (summer).....well you get my drift. It's always exciting to fly Alaska airlines ...then Horizon into Bellingham and come back. I have been reading this board long before I began to post.....and have followed your reports.....and am most appreciative of them.

RM 04/09/2008 22:09:16 GMT
Well they say its there heritage. I don't think motor boats and gill nets are a part of that heritage...I think something more selective would help us all in the end, something like fish traps or fish wheels would make it a true selective fishery. Take hatchery fish that you need and let the rest go on up river. Sound's pretty simple to me.Hell,I would even help pay to make changes to a true selective fishery!

Your right about non-experienced fishermen,I see it over and over agian. They go out for one day catch nothing then report no fish in the river...Bad for them but good for others willing to put the time in.
So what made you give up Washington for southern California if you don't mind me asking?

CAKen 04/09/2008 21:37:38 GMT
thanks for the bit to cheer me up RM. I talk with so many friends when I come back to WA...and the old "there are no fish in the river"....is a constant theme. Now granted most of these are not experienced fisherman and after 1 or 2 days....hang up the rod. On the otherhand.....I do have a couple of long time buddies like you....that have found their spots....study the tides.....etc. Indians don't get them all.....but I often wondered if there was no netting allowed ...just how much more fun it would be. Treaties.....people who were here 1st......it all means something different to everyone. And nothing against the indians ...... I just hate nets.

RM 04/09/2008 21:05:05 GMT
I have fished the Solduc and the Hoh river's,but it has been years ago.The only river on this side like the one's on the peninsula is the Sauk river...I use-to catch some really nice big steelhead on the Sauk. The number of fish in this river have fallen also...It was closed early this year on the c&r fishery to allow some of these native fish to spawn. It's a beautiful little river and one of my favorites to fish.

I would not say those river's are better then the Nooksack.I catch a lot of fish on our home river here...nets or no nets!I will fish this one till I'm old and gray.I think most of the problem fishing the Nooksack is knowing when and were the fish will be.The only way to fix that is getting out on the water.

CAKen 04/09/2008 20:40:47 GMT
RM or anyone.....do you guys still go down to the river and look around.....even when it's closed? When I was younger I had my favorite spots.....fishing or not. From time to time the quiet would be interrupted by a quick jump or splash.....fun......and I assume closed still means the indians can fish.....yes?

CAKen 04/09/2008 15:28:23 GMT
Thanks...I was surfing the net on the subject of steelhead in WA waters.....and came across the various peninsula rivers that I have either read about or heard about from time to time. The photos (maybe old)....were amazing....and some of the overall info was interesting. Certainly better action there than the Nooksack it seems ....so I was just wondering about what type of netting goes on. I would assume you are correct RM.

RM 04/08/2008 20:39:26 GMT
Yes, I think there is around eleven tribes on the Olympic peninsula. One of the most famous to date would be the Makah for hunting grey whales out of season. I have no idea if all these tribes net the rivers over there...I'm thinking all tribes have treaty rights to fish in Washington.Yes or No?

CAKen 04/08/2008 18:27:23 GMT
question.....the Nooksack is netted by the Indians.....is this the same for the peninsula rivers?

CAKen 04/06/2008 10:32:34 GMT
and to all those that post on this site.....I realize this is a Nooksack River board.....so thanks for allowing me to share a few thoughts elsewhere. I have been reading and enjoying this board for a while.......and thought since the river is now closed.....maybe a few stories from the past. Once the river reopens....I'll leave it to those who are fishing it......and to those that actually take the time for the reports.....a big thank you.....I know basically where you are at each time you post your report......so it's fun to relive things a bit. I live in So Cal.....but when I come up.....I will post my own reports....weather permitting.

CAKen 04/05/2008 19:14:54 GMT
rf....thanks for the up-date....that is pretty country. In 1968 I was 10 years old and for the next 8 years my grandfather took me on each opening day. That 40 mile gravel road (leading in)....was always a pile of dust. Camped night before and a few tagged deer walked right into our camp...would eat bread right from your hand. Put the boat in at daylight and by 8:30 had our limit (which I think at that time was 6 each).....big fat rainbows that had grown with all the feed from the Lake filling up. Dams are great for electricity....(which I believe that dam runs most of Seattle)......but just interrupts nature as it was intended. It can be great at 1st.....but then slowly you get overrun with people if its a driveable lake. Thanks for the specifics on the fish....it's been years since I have kept any myself.....but $ wasn't as plentiful back then......so a few meals of trout was nice.

rf 04/05/2008 16:24:07 GMT
CAKen-I fish Ross Lake every year.Fishin's nothing like it was years ago,but you can still catch enough to hold your interest.Limit size is way down, and they have to be 13 inches in order to keep them.No bait is allowed and single barbless hook only.Lots of fish around 12andthreequarters inches long and they never seem to get bigger.Been that way for 10 years or more.I personally don't keep any anyway. Just go for the camping trip and some beautiful country. Hozemeen camp is getting overrun by Canadians because they can camp there for free, where they have to pay on their side of the border.

RM 04/05/2008 11:16:58 GMT
TO ALL-I just received a e.mail stating that the start up meeting for CCAPNW Bellingham chapter will be April 17th at 7:00pm in Bellingham at 510 Lakeway drive(Muljat group Realtors office).

I hope to see everyone that has posted on this site at this meeting.Come out and show your support for our fisheries in the pacific northwest.Join the fight to bring fish numbers back up in our northwest rivers.

CAKen 04/05/2008 01:22:57 GMT
and since this is the Nooksack River board.....and since the river is now closed......would love to hear a steelhead story from anyone's past. I have a couple of my own but others can go 1st. I have a great catch not far from the Everson bridge and another from the north fork....back late 60s to early 70s. Someone start us off...........60s..70s..80s...90s.....current.

CAKen 04/04/2008 23:12:26 GMT
RM & MLang.......I pay no attention at all to the coast of CA.......I grew up on the Nooksack and traveled parts of BC......so my interest lies there when I come back. There are some great beaches down here....Huntington / Venice.....but closures are here and there throughout the year due to raw sewage problems....fun huh? I haven't swam in the ocean for years......but the actual coast is still pretty. As for Ross Lake.....thanks for the bit.....when they built the dam and finished the 3rd phase in 1949 (and I hate dams)....as the lake grew.....there was so much food for the fish they just grew and grew. I was lucky enough to have fished R L in the 70s and it was hot opening day. I would love to do what you have done (paddle).......and in that area there are so many other streams and what not.......just pretty country that you can reasonably drive to. I find so many people just never wish to walk at all......and if you do........it's just limitless.

MLang 04/04/2008 22:15:51 GMT
New to the site. Saw the question re: Ross Lake. I've never bothered fishing the lake but we paddle up the Upper Skagit River on the Canadian side and do pretty well. Usually try to make it up there once or twice in Sept./Oct. I suppose if there's fish in the river there should be some in the lake...

RM 04/04/2008 21:39:07 GMT
@CAKen\11echo-I hear the California and Oregon coast has been shut down to all fishing down that way. Has this been a part of your local news... or swept under the "rug"? Any info on this topic?

CAKen 04/04/2008 14:10:55 GMT
11echo......no I have never tried that Lake....but gosh there are so many fun ones and since I live in So Cal...it's always a trip up north just a bit so I go to my old favorites and streams. Usually the lakes I like to hike to are small enough that I can just walk around.....and many are just a 1/2 mile hike or so from the main roads.....the streams leading in and out are always fun.........23" G Brown?.....that's great....I'm usually catching the 10 to 14 "ers......but they fight too and are quick......

11echo 04/04/2008 10:37:36 GMT
P.S. ...I'm a Washington transplant myself. STUCK in Calif, but I like to get back to the "home area" on occasions to fish.

11echo 04/04/2008 10:34:24 GMT
CAken ...Have you tried "Mammoth Pools" Lake about 2 hours outside of Fresno (NE). The lake opens about mid-June to late Oct as I remember. Great for both Rainbows & Browns ...about 50/50. And if you go to the streams feeding the lake, you can pickup some brookies. My best was a 23" german brown on 4Lb. test! *G* Real trick to fishing the lake is to have a boat. The lake is very long and thru some "tall" country so cliffs on the side most of the way. Best fishing is at the head water ...so you need a boat to get back there.

CAKen 04/04/2008 08:37:23 GMT
RM or anyone.....for years my grandfather took me to Ross Lake on opening day.....any up-dates you can give me to what has been happening there? I am sure it's probably not as good as it once was.....but back in the 70s is when I used to go there. That long dirt road used to leave us all pretty dusty when we got there....but it was worth it. Camping the night before and getting out at daylight. .......fun times.

CAKen 04/04/2008 08:13:24 GMT
The Mammoth Lakes area is great in the summer / fall....just stop at any of the guide / fly shops and get maps of the area...there are just endless streams and small mountain lakes just a 1/2 mile hike or so off the main roads. Most people want to drive right up to their spot....so if you are willing to walk just a little....it weeds out about 90% of most people. Also.....June Lake area is okay (Yosemite area)....but overrun with too many people walking around with power bait and treble hooks....but again.....just walk some onto the trails....and make a day of it. There are no steelhead in my area....just have to head more north but rivers like the Sacramento are so long overrun .....it's not even worth a try. I am with you on Lake vs stream fishing......I like running water....reading holes etc.....and usually the small higher mountain lakes have a stream running out of them which is fun. No big fish to speak of......unless you get one of the Tim Alpers planted trout. He's famous down here for planting 6 - 8 pounders......but what fun is that really?

RM 04/04/2008 06:56:00 GMT
I'll fish the Skagit and Baker rivers this summer.I'm not much of a lake fisherman...my passion is on the water with a little more current to it. How about you any good water in So.Cal?

CAKen 04/03/2008 22:13:54 GMT
RM.....any favorite lakes or streams you frequent in the summer / early fall?

RM 04/03/2008 20:20:36 GMT
There are cutthroat and dollies in the summer but no real big numbers of trout in this river.

Steven 04/03/2008 19:23:04 GMT
Has anyone ever tried fishing the river for trout in the summer?

RM 04/02/2008 20:10:38 GMT
A difference will be made...All sportfishers must come together as one, then our voice will be heard.Only then will we will see better numbers of fish returning to our rivers.

CAKen 04/02/2008 17:57:12 GMT
"The way we harvest our fish should be reformed."

Yea and good luck with that......so very true though. Amongst all the bickering.....differing opinions.....$ under the table......enforcements.......if the powers that be don't indeed get their heads together......I cringe when I think of what the next generations will be left with. And I remember all those reforms you mentioned.....plus wasn't there a plan to dredge the river from all the build up? It's sad.....when I return I still see all the beauty and the same river that I grew up on is still there.....just minus a lot of the fish we all came to know and respect.......which is / was 75% of what many loved about the Nooksack. I am scheduled to fly into
Alaska later this year....still the only place left (plus some parts of Canada).....that reminds me of what I used to know. Hopefully through continued efforts like the CCA and others.....a difference can still be made.

RM 04/01/2008 22:20:37 GMT
CAKen- Yep river's closed till June, till September for anything worth fishing for! I'll start fishing the Skagit river June 1st for early kings if the state keeps it open.
This will be my 20th fishing season on the Nooksack this fall, and over the years I've seen farm waste reform to save fish. After that it was logging reform to save fish, now the county has and will dump millions into feeder stream/habitat restoration...none not one has had a effect on rebuilding fish runs on the Nooksack river. The fish have to make it to this new million dollar habitat first. It's time to look at the real problem. The way we harvest our fish should be reformed.

CAKen 04/01/2008 21:33:22 GMT
thanks RM. Ya know.....I've often thought how nice it would be if somehow the Nooksack could be closed entirely for 2 - 3 years. Just let it rest in peace for a couple of years. Now....I realize that is just a dream and the practicality of doing so is not realistic. (The Indians....treaties etc.) But if this could be done.....and the river was overseen for the illegal nets and poaching......it would be great. I know..I know.......but I remember a few decades ago......and sometimes think about how much fun it would be to go back even further to the early 1900s. Can you imagine? Life would be a whole lot tougher.......so maybe just for a month or so. Now....what are you or anyone else up to these days.....the rivers closed....right? thanks...Ken

CAKen 04/01/2008 04:23:44 GMT
thanks RM.....I can still remember getting out of bed shivering from cold and having to layer myself until I got warm.....then grandpa driving his truck up to the river bank in complete darkness......and pulling out the hot chocolate for us. There is nothing like the sound of complete quiet interrupted by listening to the river flow. Every kid should have that experience but with the population explosion in W Washington....plus all the other problems of over and careless fishing (plus the state leaders as you mentioned).....it is sad. Can you give me the direct link to CCA. thanks......

RM 03/31/2008 20:51:18 GMT
@CAKen- Yah I think its getting pretty ugly, lower numbers every year. It's sad that the state leaders in CA,OR,WA sit on there hands and let a northwest icon(salmon/steelhead)get wiped out from over harvest for a few bucks.
Join CCA and help turn this trend around so are kids and grandkids can catch these great fish on a rod and reel.If we do nothing there will be none left, just stories.

CAKen 03/31/2008 08:02:30 GMT
and let me add I am 50 years old.......and 43 years ago or so I was fishing the Nooksack each year with my Grandfather.....who was a steelhead junkie.......and the stories I still have are treasures. I come back yearly and am saddened by what all has happened.....no easy answers to any of this.......and the illegal nets are most troublesome. But the river still remains as pretty today as back then.....so for those who contribute to this site....thank you very much

CAKen 03/31/2008 07:47:04 GMT
For those posting on this site......thank you. I grew up on the Nooksack but have been in So CA now for years. I really appreciate reading info about my favorite river.

@RM--My email is knexxot@gmail.com- and I'll give you a contact number from there. Or, come into Joe's Sporting Goods (previously G.I. Joe's) and ask for a guy named Peter. I'm the only 18 year old Asian kid working the cashier position if I'm working.

RM 03/26/2008 19:11:07 GMT
Ken- If you'd like I'll put you in to some fish this fall on the Nooksack,I fish out of Ferndale early in the season. So if your serious about catching a salmon let me know and we'll set something up.I have no problem helping others learn the tricks of the trade. One day wont kill me!!! I'll need a contact number sometime before September?

KenX 03/26/2008 18:30:37 GMT
No, I haven't seen any action on the Nooksack as of yet. I've seen some (after it's been closed). I did manage a few on the Whatcom Creek though, LEGALLY without flossing! I got a nice chrome chum and another chum that looked oddly like a sockeye. All in all, not the best season. Someone should meet up with me somewhere this upcoming season and take me out on a fishing day with em!

RM 03/24/2008 21:36:05 GMT
@KenX- Well how did you do on the river this year, any good hookup's? I'm hoping the salmon season this year will be a little more productive then last year. looking forward to putting a nice chrome King on the bank on September 1st!

KenX 03/24/2008 21:03:33 GMT
I'm sure there are other waters that are producing this time of year and I'm more than sure others are open! The Nooksack ain't doing so hot. If you like catching the salmon, let them be--or there won't be any more in the future to catch from the Nooksack.

Digler 03/24/2008 11:25:32 GMT
MA-Just because your not keeping them doesn't mean your not a poacher. Your still fishing closed waters and that makes you criminal by federal law and anyone that fails to follow regulations set forth by the WDFW is considered a poacher by there standards. If your for real they'll be looking for you!

KenX 03/23/2008 22:17:04 GMT
There's a reason why the Nooksack is closed. And certainly so when Fish & Wildlife are out there slapping people with poaching tickets. I realize the Nooksack has a lot of fish in it, I go hiking along the river's shore and watch them. But leave the fish alone man, if you really want to fish--go out on the bay and catch some nice ones or along the skagit. BTW, Some fly fisher guide is running his business on the nooksack. A lot of people are hooking up on that guide because apparently he can guide the closed waters.

RM 03/23/2008 21:05:20 GMT
MA- You cant be serious! Just because they could care less if they kill every last fish in the system, what makes you any different if your out there stressing these fish? It's crappy sportsmen like you(thinking only of yourself) that will close this fishery period for the rest of us.You may not be a poacher, but your not helping the problem either.Show some class and stay off the river.

MA 03/23/2008 19:28:06 GMT
The Indians were supposed to be done fishing on the 15th of Jan.,but they stopped on the 10th,because of no fish. But they reserved the right to fish later on then in the season. Well, there wasn't any fish for me either, so I reserved my right to fish too. PS.I might be a dip shit but I'm not a poacher. Haven't kept a steelhead in 20 years. They are way more fun to catch than to eat

blah 03/23/2008 17:20:18 GMT
Hey dip shit the nooksacks closed you idiot poacher!

blah 03/23/2008 15:38:41 GMT
isnt the nooksack closed?

MA 03/23/2008 15:16:10 GMT
Nooksack is red hot right now. 6 chromers today, 5 yesterday.Gobbling up eggs with pink corkie and chartreuse yarn

RM 03/06/2008 18:20:34 GMT
I caught Gary Loomis CCA presentation in Skagit county. He had some good stuff to say,and has some impressive numbers on were are fish are going. I would strongly recommend going and joining if you would like to see better numbers of fish returning to our rivers.I have joined, and will see you all on the 11th also.

Ed Megill 03/06/2008 12:29:18 GMT
Cooper Net,

If you will contact me, I can help facilitate removal if it is still there. We have established a good working relationship with Nooksack Tribal Enforcement. Jason Cross and I have successfully worked with them to have nets removed.

I can be reached at 360-303-7409 or emegill@cablespeed.com

Also, a friendly heads up!

Gary Loomis will be in Bellingham, WA next Tuesday, 3/11/2007, to speak about CCA and our fisheries.

It is being held at the gym at Bloedel Donovan Park Multi-Purpose Gymnasium from 6:30-8:30pm.

Address
2214 Electric Street
Bellingham, WA 98226

Directions
Drive east up Alabama Hill and turn right at the end of the street where it meets the lake. Turn left at the second entrance on the left.

CCA will make a diffence but we all have to work together.

I hope to have the opportunity to see you all there!

Ed

Did any one see the cull net in the cable hole?I reported it to the stupid game jerks.Did they do there job???I bet not

NorthForkRunner 03/01/2008 07:35:54 GMT
It sure would be nice to fish at the peak of the season.I had some epic days in march in the years past. Our season just gets shorter and shorter.I dont understand why.Maybe they dont trust us to release our catch,So they close the river due to under staffed game dept.Where are our rights? We dont have any rights to fish or hunt.True I know what The season dates our but, they all can change. There are no refunds,I know our state is wasting our fees they collected.Oh well Costco has farm raised fish on sale,Dont get me started on that subject.
Thanks RM for the gill net link

RM 02/29/2008 21:31:41 GMT
Well another fishing season has come to a end on the mighty Nooksack! What now, I think I will go after some sturgeon on the lower Stillaguamish lot of nice fish in the lower end,and try for some kings on the Columbia in MAY(HANFORD REACH AREA).Then back to the upper Skagit for some kings on June 1st.

Steven 02/29/2008 20:51:54 GMT
Thanks RM!

RM 02/26/2008 20:02:07 GMT
@steven-That would be your social security number he's talking about, not really a problem.Unless you have something to hide? The game department uses it to speed up the process when you renew your licence.

steven 02/26/2008 18:57:10 GMT
what the heck do you mean by "the new system they use tracking your every move" northforkrunner.

NorthForkRunner 02/24/2008 07:47:29 GMT
RE:S
The real problem is the money spent. The south fork hatchery is so small they do toss fish and sell eggs.
They cant hatch all the eggs.
Ironic that the we cant fish the south fork until late into the run,That is if you can buy a licence some where.
Im sure some of you love the new system they use tracking your every move

@Chris: BUT YOU DID COMPREHEND IT! SO DID I! We're not too dim-witted ourselves!

*HIGH FIVES ALL AROUND*

Chris 02/21/2008 22:12:12 GMT
RM: Good to hear! Glad to see people doing their part to protect our fisheries.

S: Not to be an ass but you say "Dim witted" I would recommend you proofread your posts before you hit the save button. No punctuation, spelling errors, and poor grammar. Really makes you look like a complete idiot. I do agree with your post, though it's very difficult to comprehend.

s 02/21/2008 20:39:55 GMT
well i just reading the post by cry me a river if you think that the little nety in the river is not just as bad as over fishing in the ocean you are as dim witted as your post sounds if you go down and whatch them pull there nets from the river and i dont just mean once or twice i live right where they net im on the river all the time i live on it and see them pull all the time they catch way more fish than yoy will ever realise and it is usally when you are not there because the net do really well when the river is dirty and the fish cant see the nets they pull them and they are completly full of fish that are dead and no good to eat because they were to lazy to keep up on it and it has been there for 3or 4 days and they just through them on the bank to finish rotting but what the hay it just a small net oh ya i forgot about all the other nets on the wholr lower river that all nock the crap out of the few fish that brave all the nets in the ocean and get back to our puny river to get wasted on the bank because the indians want to sell the eggs and the rest of the fish is worthless way past its prime

RM 02/21/2008 06:51:06 GMT
@Chris- I sure did! I left it in the water and removed the hook...Its a good idea not to handle these fish if possible. They are listed as a threatened fish by the WDFW and must be released unharmed. This will also help in the future so there's fish in the river for fishing seasons to come.

Chris 02/21/2008 00:55:22 GMT
RM: Did you release the native?

RM 02/20/2008 18:06:17 GMT
@11echo- No fishing on the river system in April it closes at the end of the month. It reopens on June 1st.Looks like bad timing right in the middle of the closure.

11echo 02/20/2008 11:56:37 GMT

Fished the north fork at Truck road on Sunday...had a nice native to the bank, and another spit my spoon back at me!Both in the 10 pound range.I couldn't ask for a nicer day on the river. A fella I fish with caught a 7 to 8 pound hatchery fish just below the mosquito lake road bridge Saturday.

Went to the NF today. Beautiful weather and so was the water, unfortunately no fish. Brought my 8wt and my 5wt but not a single tease. I wasn't able to go out long but maybe next weekend plan on making a day out of it due to so much water to cover. My hats off to the Steelheaders out there. Very tough fish to find.

@rf- I haven't had a look at it this week.I hope it stays in shape with this warming weather.

@sledjocky And here I am thinking the fish are way the heck past the hatchery. I might try under the Mosquito Lk Rd bridge some more!

sledjocky 02/12/2008 18:20:13 GMT
I heard several fish have been caught between Hwy 9 and Welcome. 1 was a 18# hatchery fish.

Redguitarfish 02/12/2008 07:40:39 GMT
@crymeariver...Hey, no problem. It's hard to believe that it's been 35 years since that Bolt decision...where does the time go?
Lately, I've been thinking I might just settle down with a nice Makah girl, and go do me some Whale fishing! But I wonder...is my 11 wt. rod going to be adequate? And how much backing will I need? And even if I can match the hatch, where can I find a good plankton pattern?

CRYMEARIVER 02/12/2008 06:27:38 GMT
@Redguitarfish-It was a "quot" from a smart guy 1/25/08. Thanks for the help though.

Fished the Skagit/Sauk area hooked alot of Dolly Varden no steelhead.Anyone out there hook one up this weekend?Or have a fishing report of any kind?

KenX 02/11/2008 20:42:47 GMT
Let's keep the flaming down to a minimal. This is a forum to discuss the matters of fishing, and not overlying issues that affect it. The salmon population is definitely suffering, however, I would dare say, after taking a look at some spawning grounds (along N. Fork Rd.) it was about 30 feet wide and about 6 inches deep, the next time I drove out there to spot it, it was only about 6 inches wide and making riffles. All I'm saying is that any redds that weren't within that 6 inch strip of water would have been dehydrated and destroyed.

On a side note, if netting the rivers is such a big deal, just have some donations and grab some boulders to place into the river--these obstacles will stop nets. OR, propose a larger minimum net requirement, this way, the smaller fish can get through (like pinks) and only large fish will be retained [i.e. 6x6 inch minimum per net vertex).

OR (this idea will upset everyone) shut down Salmon harvesting altogether for 5 years and let them repopulate, with the help of the hatcheries and the absence of superficial predators, salmon populations should be up in healthy levels.

CRYMEARIVER 02/11/2008 19:15:20 GMT
Oh ya in good taste "save a fish bonk an injin" I think the only thing you brought to attention is that your an idiot. If you think your going to save a fish with off color remarks you might be at it a while! You bet wrong been here all my life, still be here when your in the clink for pulling nets. I do not support nets in our river or in the ocean, thats were the CCA will step in commercial over harvest is the problem not some small net in the river.

NorthForkRunner 02/11/2008 10:18:44 GMT
RE:CRYMEARIVER/KEVIN You are not a native of this area I bet.
`The way you make it sound you support native gill nets in our threatened river systems.
My government granted Natives the right to fish and hunt and we cant take there rights back until our fish make the indangered speices list.
Ironic that you say I bitch,The best way to change things is to bring some attention to the issue,I've seem to do that job.
I would never join some stupid internet club. That wont do a thing to stop the further damage The CULL NET is doing in the cable hole.I tryed to remove it even though the prohibits me.
I think my note was in good taste and was just an example of the carnage gill nets create. There are other methods they could use to harest fish.
So go fish the river, and dont forget your carmel Latte

KenX 02/10/2008 22:27:26 GMT
@Redguitarfish I will try the mi. post 21 area. Thanks!

Redguitarfish 02/10/2008 21:43:46 GMT
@KenX...I bought the 5mm neoprenes from Cabellas fifteen years ago, and have enjoyed them all this time. I bought the stocking foot variety so I could use my scuba fins while in my float tube, but the boot version is probably good too. The only thing with the 5mm is it gets pretty hot in them while fishing early...like springs on the Fraser, or humpies in the Skagit. Try parking at mi. post 21 on the Baker Hwy., and following the fence down to the N. Fork.

digler 02/10/2008 13:02:17 GMT
Any body been fishing the middle fork at all?

KenX 02/09/2008 15:41:43 GMT
Fished below the Mosquito Lk Rd Bridge and along the N. Fork Rd. Water is really shallow and full of salmon skeletons. No luck. Do people fish above the Kendall fish hatchery? I need some guidance. Or I might just wait until October/November for the Chum.

RM 02/08/2008 22:34:19 GMT
@KenX-I told you those guys at Joe's are not so brite.I use the Bare brand of neoprene 5mm wader, the shoulder straps are Velcro so there adjusted very easily threw the day.I don't see any others using this system, its very handy if your fishing for long periods of time.As for the new style i don't know much about them.
The float fishing system is a good start try a pink jig tipped with a sandshrimp tail under your float also.GOOD LUCK!

KenX 02/08/2008 11:20:26 GMT
@rf Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know the names of the creeks so I assumed the same rules applied as the Nooksack.

@RM I went and bought some magazines about salmon and steelhead, lots of good information. Looks like I'll be trying the drift float with egg cluster set-up.

The next question I have, as the Joe's guy had no idea of the difference (other than "one feels softer than the other"), Are neoprene chest waders better than the nylon/other-material chest waders? AND Chest waders with boots or just stock feet?

Steven 02/08/2008 10:15:13 GMT
KenX those creeks are closed. Look up freshwater rules.

rf 02/08/2008 07:10:32 GMT
@RM-I've fished with a him a few times and he likes to fish within a couple miles each way of the Sauk. Especially below when the water there is fishable.I have'nt made it to that area yet,but planning on going once the Nooksack closes

RM 02/07/2008 19:02:41 GMT
@rf- Did you ever make it up to the Rockport area to fish?It sounds like Endsley made out pretty good, was he above or below the Sauk... do you know? I would say his clients got there moneys worth.

rf 02/07/2008 14:29:51 GMT
@ RM- no reports from the Sauk, but heard from Rob Endsley, the guide on the Skagit. His boat hooked 12 steelhead yesterday, with only 2 clients on board

sledjockey 02/07/2008 10:19:35 GMT
I hear that some fish are being caught on the south fork.

KenX 02/06/2008 21:57:45 GMT
After looking on google's satellite maps, I saw that there are a few creeks running into the Nooksack. Such as the one by the Canyon Rd and another one slightly past Maple Falls. I'd figure I'd give them a go, any reports on those areas (right by the Mt. Baker Highway bridges.

Also, any reports (or past reports) of fish right by the Mosquito Lk. Rd. Bridge?

RM 02/06/2008 21:38:08 GMT
KenX- Starting out guys will go with a spinning setup (no back lash)its easier to control. If your a bass guy it shouldn't be a problem with a bait-caster. Go with whatever you are comfterbul with.

Heading up to the Sauk river on saturday to find some early native cromers, any reports on the Sauk river?

Jumpin 02/06/2008 16:31:56 GMT
slyCooper - Your best bet for bow fishin around here is for carp, they did have a tourney on memorial day weekend at Moses lake (eastern wa.)Held at Airemans beach. Otherwise Black lake (by Olympia) has been known for that.

good shootin

KenX 02/06/2008 11:12:57 GMT
I'm planning to fish under the Mosquito Lk Rd bridge right before N. Fork Rd. It looks like boat access or wader access would be advised?

KenX 02/06/2008 11:12:07 GMT
Now here's my next question, spinning/baitcasting gear or fly-fishing gear?

SlyCooper 02/06/2008 01:32:37 GMT
Whats up? I've never fished in a river, I use to fish in Puget Sound and recently moved to Everson and just recently I saw a video on youtube about Bowfishing. Can you Bowfish on the Nooksack or anywhere around it? I dont know much about it but it looks like a lot of fun.

Thanks.

KenX 02/05/2008 19:01:08 GMT

Well it is a tuesday, and the weather was pretty ugly. Most of us fish guys have to work.Dont think that your going to walk in and start hooking fish...steelhead fishing is a art. It takes years to learn.I know guys that have fished for years and years befor hooking up.So like i said befor you have to put your time in on the water, learn to read the river. If you here of fellas catching fish after fish thay are right under a hatchery were fish stack up.

KenX 02/05/2008 17:46:53 GMT
Went fishing under Mosquito Lk Rd by the N. Fork road. Are there any other access points? I had no luck whatsoever, and it seemed like I was fishing the main current (very wide river btw). No idea what I was doing, my set-up was pencil, with 3 feet of leader before I have a winged corkie, green yarn, and a size 4 salmon hook with 2 single-salmon eggs baited on it. Again, are there other access points (or areas to fish)?

There wasn't anyone there either. I drove the entire length of N. Fork Rd and didn't see ANYONE fishing.

sickday 02/05/2008 09:52:03 GMT
Feeling a little restless today. Thought the weather might have fish felling the same way. Any boat access up around Skookum? Cheers.

KenX 02/04/2008 22:24:07 GMT
I talked with some guy who told me how to set up a corkie set with some yarn under some leader by the wire-lead. He wasn't much older than a college kid, but certainly younger than the average experienced fisherman. I'll give it a go.

RM 02/04/2008 20:31:47 GMT
Ken-Did you get any good info at Joe's? It seems to me every time I go in that store I get a collage kid that has no idea where the Nooksack river is.Or better yet one that has ever fished a river in his life!

The bridge on mosquito lake road is a good place to walk in,you can walk for miles up river.

KenX 02/04/2008 20:12:54 GMT
Stopped by Joe's to have a chat. Been asking around for river access along the N. Fork. I assume people just park their cars along the road and walk down to the bank?

KenX 02/03/2008 19:31:50 GMT
It'd certainly be cheaper that way. :P No, I want to catch them myself but I have no idea how. I have a pole with 14 pound braided test, and I just don't know how or where to go.

Pink worms or steelhead jigs under a float. Roe is also a good option under a float.

RM 02/03/2008 14:29:16 GMT
@KenX-The fish in the river right now are steelhead and dollies. There sould be a few hatchery fish still showing, but mostly native steelhead.I mostly use hardware (spoons/spinners)on these fish to cover more water and stay off the bottom. Its more of a challang but i pick up a few.

Any one with firther info for KenX? Good luck to you!

Muff Diver 02/01/2008 10:56:22 GMT
The one below me is not the real Muff Diver.

Also, over harvest in the Oceans is a big deal, but the WDFW has so much black cock up their ass, they cant see the light of day. Then the Indian nets over the rivers just make matters worse, but we, the sport fisherman, have to pay the price for the bureaucratic bullshit the WDFW causes.

I think we should be asking some qustions. Thay sould come out and say...Sorry sport guys but overharvest in the ocean is the reason you have poor returns on your river. But if thay told the truth i think thay would be looking for new jobs.

krumy 01/31/2008 16:11:45 GMT
I hear all the bichin about the gill nets but if people aren't willing to do anything about it than quit bitchin. It is really easy to sit back and let others do the dirty work. Get off your ass and do something about it there are ways to deal with it, we just have to figure out what it is. Boo Hoo, suck up the teers and do something.

Zogg 01/31/2008 10:48:16 GMT
If your looking to get a steelhead group started. Maybe there are enough people here in WA. that would like to start some chapters of The Association of Northwest Steelheaders. Get it here in WA. instead of only in OR., it might be worth a try. They are a good organization that lobby for conservation and the rights of sportsfisherman, or they used to be. I've been away for a while.

Digler 01/30/2008 08:31:44 GMT
It's a steelhead group, they used to be apart of the whatcom chapter of trout unlimited, but went on there own. I understand that theres like 60-70 eople that go to the meetings, but only 6 members will pay the club dues. Sounds like a gentlemens drinking club to me. It would be nice to have some kind of association where all members pay a due, theres a web site and some accountability or allocation to how contributions will go to help or sustain our local fishery. Kinda of like CCA or WSC, something or anything, because right now there's nothing and the state doesn't give a shit about the nooksack, where just gettin feed the bone!

RM 01/29/2008 18:46:24 GMT
BS- Is it a steelhead group or is the saltwater guys? There is a club that meets downtown, its listed in "Reelnews" paper.Went to a CCA meeting in skagit co. on the 19th Gary Loomis spoke. It would be a good thing to start a chapter up in this county.

NO fishing for me this weekend, just made back from Californa. Pointing fingers at everyone but ourselfs is the biggest problem.Did you guys know that the commercel fleet in Alaska had the fourth highest catch on recored ever in 2007? If your new to this salmon thing all the fish returning to our rivers hang out in Alaska! So banner year up there low returns down on are rivers, this is wear our anger should be focused. The tribes take is a drop in the bucket if you look up the numbers, dont get me wrong i dont like any nets river or ocean! But trust me theres bigger fish to fry up north.

"Save a fish" Bonk an Injin!!
What a joke our river rights have become.I pay alot of money as you other ethical rednecks to fish as a sport and past time.Yes I do molest a few fish at times but the damage I do with a single barbless hook,,,,well...I do admit I have left a few holes in the lips of the fish but im sure they were fine,But I cant go fish the river due to dumb rules. I personaly watched a natives throw a hundred or more dead pink salmon back as they fished for silvers.Hummmm,,how do you fish for silvers when the pink run is down?? Oh ya gill nets..just throw the dead ones back.and they wonder why there are no fish.
Take back your right to fish anytime anywhere

Hey Muff Diver, or should I say salad tosser, cause I think you have your holes mixed up. The indians aren't allowed to net after the 15th, if you see any you should pull them and call fish & game. Have fun riding the Hershey highway and careful HANGING OUT with those cowboys up on Brokeback Mt. you might get railed, but it sounds like you enjoy that kind of thing, don't be afraid to come out of the closet, that goes for you too wangstar you two are both a couple of fags.

gota love it someone who understands the real problem a few oficers on the river when the nets are in so the indians cant lie about the catch they say i got 5 fish this year and the guy who was there for the state who really counted got 55 fish who is the lier probably not the state guy. but it would be great to see the reaction given for the seven oclock news by the head indian on there out right lieing on the catch anyhow they have to get there nets out soon and stay out till the springs come in in the spring good fishing to all

RM 01/11/2008 19:26:35 GMT
Maybe the state should spend a little money on regulating the fish kills on are rivers insted of spinding millons on inhansment programs. You will never bring fish numbers up if thay never make it back to spawn! Seems like a no brainer to me.Pull the nets and we will have a inhansment program that works. This plan would save the state millons and also save are fish runs.

@RM-Thanks for the info.A buddy of mine has a cabin a couple miles above Concrete, so maybe I can talk him into going there for a couple of days. Thanks again

@rf- I do most of my fishing at the 530 bridge, the bar on the south side up river is pretty good. Also on the north side below bridge not much bank on this side...pretty good holding water for salmon and steelhead if you hit it early.Lots of boat traffic in the area. The fish get spooked pretty good after the boats start working it over.

Fished the North Fork around the Truck Rd. all day, saw a guy catch a wild steelie from a drift boat early in the morning. Managed to land a 26" dolly, didn't see any other fish, an alright day, kind of slow, but better then working!
